In all Chrono Cross is an intriguing cult classic brought back for fans old and new alike. Even despite the touch ups the graphics are clearly that of an older game thanks to the specific style that they chose when originally making Cross, and it isn’t a perfect remaster, some issues do appear in performance (FPS drops occur occasionally). It has an intriguing story and concept that provides a fascinating spin on the classic time travel tropes of ‘saving yourself’ since in Cross, it's already far too late, and you don’t even know why.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition on PC feels more like an enhanced port offering both Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers with some quality of life improvements on Steam. The classic graphical style is how I enjoyed Chrono Cross, and it has been a joy to finally experience this game after all these years. The new graphical style sadly has too many issues to bother with right now on any platform sadly. I've also enjoyed checking out Chrono Cross on Steam Deck over the last week or so where it runs quite well after some tweaking, and it's a great way to play it if you have the option.

Chrono Cross is a strange, wonderful game that was not afraid to take big risks. The port doesn’t exactly cover it in glory but considering the game has been languishing in purgatory for so long it’s nice that it sees the light of day at all. There is little here for people who aren’t already fans of the genre to recommend. But for JRPG fans this is a fascinating time capsule, especially for PAL gamers who didn’t get to experience it first time round.

I can't help but say that this is an emulated version of this classic title more than anything else. I love the fact that we got extra features; however, the game's terrible framerate and the super-lazy-applied technique to smooth the visuals are extremely deceiving, which ended up causing a melting effect in backgrounds. Square Enix should've handled this more respectfully.

It overcomes the frame rate and allows battles to feel quick and seamless, a fresh breath of air especially during the segments where you must power through multiple battles while listening to the same song for the duration.My only other gripe is while the characters were remastered and upscaled, the background graphics look untouched and fuzzy. That said, I can't seem to put the game down.

It is a pity that the game has not been given a newer jacket, because the appearance due to the graphics is now not completely up to date. But if you play long enough, the jacket secretly fits like a glove and you have a smile on your face non-stop when you play Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and that's ultimately what counts!.

Long awaited masterpiece Chrono Cross is back, and the HD remaster done by Square-Enix fit perfectly as an ode to the series started in 1995 with Chrono Trigger. Now with the sequel-spin-off Radical Dreamers for the first time released across the world and finally translated, The Radical Dreamers Edition does and outstanding job reminding us how epic was Chrono Cross back in 1999 and how it's still up to date in 2022 in terms of quality and gameplay. One of the best JRPG ever made with new 3D models, 2D redrawn work on HD and power-up buttons. Probably the best HD remaster from Square-Enix made to date. Not a single technical issue despite controversy across social media, we played 50+ hours on four different Xbox consoles, and even PS4, just to find out Switch and Steam ports are the ones having real trouble on framerate and delay, not on Xbox nor PS4.

I found that this game will bring nothing but hours of entertainment, with 40 uniquely different characters to play and a story that unravels as you play and defeat enemies along the way. It’s definitely a game to have in one’s collection.

I didn't realize that until about 5-10 years ago when I finally fully experienced this game. The music is wonderful, I love the colors of the game, and I love the concept of the parallel worlds. Not a new concept, but it was done well. People expecting a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger were disappointed. Admittedly, Chrono Trigger was perfection, and outside of producing basically the same game again, people were not going to be happy. I like that Squaresoft (now Square Enix) wanted to do something different for this game. The personality for this game was similar to Chrono Trigger, yet distinctly different. I do think that the element grid system is cumbersome (thank god for auto-allocate, but still, what a drag), and there are too many characters to really have significant character development for any of them. I think Radius probably had the most interesting story.Remaster:As for the remaster, I do agree partially with other reviewers commenting on the frame rate. For the bit of the little bit of the remaster that I tried, I wouldn't say the frame rate was worse than the PS1 game. It's about the same. The original game did not have a great frame rate. Don't believe me? Go and boot it up and you will see. I think there's an opportunity for this game to really wow people with a remaster by fixing that. Is it broken? No, absolutely not. The character models are better, it just needs an improved frame rate to give the game a polish to it. Now as for the soundtrack and sound in general, the quality to me is noticeably improved. That was the first thing I noticed was the sound quality. And to ease any fears, those remixed tracks are not used in the game itself, it's the original soundtrack with the sound quality improved.For those of you that enjoyed this game before, you will enjoy revisiting it, now with trophies as an incentive to experience this game in full. An easy recommendation to buy. For those of you that are determined to hate this game with all of your being, you will undoubtedly continue to do so. I'm someone that was disappointed with the game initially, revisited it about 10 years ago and changed my mind. Chrono Cross is an incredible game that has been deserving a remaster for far too long. It's a shame that, after all these years, it had to arrive in such a sorry state. The Radical Dreamers Edition does some minor work in improving and upgrading the experience, but with such poor optimisation, it's a headache to enjoy the experience. Longtime fans might be able to forgive the issues and savour the incredible visual novel side-story Radical Dreamers, but a game as iconic as this deserves better.

Unfortunately the operation of "rebirth" is not entirely successful due to some questionable choices, but the inclusion of the elusive Radical Dreamers contributes to a package that – especially at this price – must be a part of the cultural baggage of any fan of JRPG worthy of the name.

That it still feels unique and even subversive, more than 20 years on from its first release, is proof its timelessness. And for a large part of the world for whom The Radical Dreamers Edition will be the first chance to (officially) play Chrono Cross? Well, they’re in for one hell of a ride.

One of the best JRPG ever made lands in Europe for the first time, with localised text and the addition of Radical Dreamers. It’s great to be able to finally play it, even if it falls short as a remaster.

I went into this review with a little bit of trepidation. I adored Chrono Cross the previous times I’ve played it, but it’s been a good decade or so since I last did so. I was just as riveted playing the game on Switch now as I was years ago, enjoying building a different party and exploring the world in a different way. The speed-up and toggles for enemy encounters and battle boosts were welcome in this playthrough, mostly because I could toy with elements and characters more than I did in the past. While Radical Dreamers isn’t much more than an alternate history curiosity, the fact it is actually localized and legitimately available outside of Nintendo’s long inactive downloadable Satellaview network is incredible. Chrono Cross is a wonderful game - hands down my favorite PlayStation RPG - and the Radical Dreamers Edition is the best and friendliest way to play it.

The completed restoration is more or less in line with expectations: the inclusion of Radical Dreamers, a discreet reinterpretation of the audio / visual sector, a good localization in Italian and new game mechanics to attract younger users or newbies to the genre. Now that we have seen the re-release of Chrono Cross, another question legitimately arises: when is the return of Vagrant Story?

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition has become one of my favorite JRPGs, and I regret not playing it sooner. This is a must-play game for any JRPG fan. From its remarkably well-written narrative that will stay with you for years, to the approachable yet still involved combat mechanics coupled with an endearing presentation, I fell in love with this title far more than I thought I would.

Parts of Chrono Cross really haven't aged well, but it's still a charming, characterful JRPG that evokes feelings of the genre's golden age on PS1. It's a game that deserves better than The Radical Dreamers Edition, which, at least at launch, is a dreadfully poor remaster. Crippled by frame rate issues, it beggars belief that a title from 1999 could run this badly on modern hardware. Unless you're desperate for the nostalgia, we strongly recommend waiting to see whether Square Enix releases a patch to improve the package on PS4 and PS5 before buying.
