Most of the game past chapter 2 is too easy. Some of the the end-bosses make up for it though by being quite difficult. Also like most JRPGs, the dialogue is overlong, mawkish, and reads like it was written for 12 year-olds. I almost have to deduct a point just for the endless bloviating filled with after-school special moralizing. The characters in this game just won't shut up, and take every opportunity to pontificate with trite dialog.All-in-all, Octopath Traveler successfully recreates the gameplay of nostalgic titles such as Cronotrigger and Xenogears, but doesn't capture the story-telling that made those games truly great.

The graphics are trendsetting while still paying homage to the old JRPG ways. Despite this, so much is done wrong. Key things. I don't play a JRPG for a linear and story I'm thrown into. I wouldn't pick up a traveller to see a new story. This game needs a remastered + remaked ASAP. Full voice-acting, more in game artwork (if the game was themed around those fantastic drawings, imagine how much better this game would be), portrait models and a more thought out and interesting stories. Also it's extremely confusing on what to do - I feel like the game has no main quests/story. Why am I picking up other travellers and seeing their prologue too when I can just do that picking them at the start? If I was picking them up, why can't there be any unique relations/dialogue things. Many QOL improvements needed as well - random combat events are annoying af and makes me want to stop playing - I think cut it out entirely or maybe in game monster sprites - boost the exp rate/hp which would make the long waiting in combat more bearable.

Déjà au niveau des scénarios proposés. Pour ceux ne connaissant pas vraiment le style, nous sommes dans un JRPG à l’ancienne (tour par tour) en 2D combinant en une sorte de pixel art. Vous choisissez le personnage avec lequel vous allez débuter l’aventure et ensuite vous pouvez (devez) rejoindre les 7 autres persos jouables qui ont leur scénario propre (mais qui finit par se rejoindre).Certains scénarios sont vraiment étonnant pour ce type de jeu comme celui de Primrose, où on y parle de prostitution, de soumission, … (à ma connaissance c’est pas trop dans la mouvance JRPG, ou on le fait comprendre sans le dire ouvertement. Là c’est cash). D’autres sont plus classiques comme le chevalier qui cherche à retrouver son honneur perdu, ou le voleur trahit par un complice. Cela alterne souvent entre le « gentil naif » qu’on a l’habitude de voir, au « ah ouais, y a des sacrifices humains, et du trafic de femmes sous couvert de prostitution ». Intéressant…Si le gameplay est assez classique (les amoureux des JRPG à l’ancienne trouveront vite leurs repères), il y a aussi des petites nouveautés très sympas. Par exemple chacun de vos personnages a des compétences qu’il peut exercer sur les PNJ. Certains pourront les questionner en profondeur (ça permet par exemple de découvrir des secrets cachés, des quêtes annexes, ou des objets cachés), d’autres pourront les défier en duel (affronter une mamie villageoise pour gagner un peu d’EXP, c’est du jamais vu…), d’autres pourront les séduire pour qu’ils nous accompagnent dans le jeu (et serviront de 5ème combattant), et d’autres surprises que je vous laisse découvrir. Cette interactivité avec les PNJ des villages est vraiment bien pensé et novatrice.Le jeu n’est pas trop facile mais pas non plus trop difficile. Je trouve qu’ils ont réussi à trouver un certain équilibre même si je regrette que nos persos de l’équipe en attente (on ne peut contrôler que 4 joueurs en même temps sur les 8), ne gagnent pas d’exp (même à minima). Vu qu’on doit faire évoluer le scénario de chaque perso pour avancer dans le jeu global, on se retrouve souvent à devoir trainer un perso inutile (et très faible vu qu’on l’a pas fait trop évoluer) le temps de sa phase d’histoire.Visuellement il alterne le magnifique (surtout en extérieur) avec le moyen, mais moi j’adore ce style graphique dont je ne suis peut être pas objectif. Ca mélange le pixel art avec un style FF4 pour les personnages, combats, etc…;, avec des graphismes HD pour les décors en avant plan ou arrière plan (certains environnements sont superbes). Les musiques sont magnifiques également.Sur la fin, le jeu devient vite redondant cependant et on aspire à finir le jeu. Attention, la vraie fin du titre se débloque uniquement après le 1er ending et si on réussit certaines quêtes annexes. This had to be expected due to the nature of the game where you choose and pick adventures from eight different paths, but it definitely negatively impacts the game. The narrative also sounded rather pretentious, more in a few paths than others, with generally little substance.Each character's chapter is essentially the game holding your hand very tightly to guide you from one cutscene to the next, to ultimately lead you to a minimal maze with random encounters and a boss at the end. Between this and the side quests that are often totally on the opposite side of the spectrum with their cryptic nature, I feel like the game failed at finding the right level of difficulty outside of battles.Overall, the game hits some individual good notes, but isn't build well enough to hold everything together. I have finished the story of four characters in a semi-casual manner and have 59 hours of playtime on my save file (Likely 70 hours totally including the unsaved content). The first 5-10 hours was the best part for me.

Octopath Traveler on Xbox is a game that expertly marries a traditional JRPG with more modern ideas. It should be immediately obvious that this is the intention with the “HD-2D” visuals, but even after only a short time playing it feels so well-executed.

I use the softer music to help me sleep, and the battle themes for other games I play. The characters all have their strengths and weaknesses, yet they are all great overall. Incredible voice acting, great dialogue, and fantastic design make each character and their story feel unique. The world you explore is full of things to do and quests that require you to think rather than following one thing over and over again. The combat itself is fun and satisfying, as there are endless combinations to what you can pull off. The graphics are beautiful, even though sometimes they can be lacking in some areas. It's not perfect, but it's still amazing and beautiful the way it is. There's a lot to do in this game, a lot to discover and find.If you're not sure if you like this game, I know on Switch there is a 3 hour demo where you play the ACTUAL game rather than a certain mission that's not in the game. It gives you complete freedom for the most part, and it's so much fun you'll want to play more. But now that it's on Game Pass you can try playing it for yourself, and see what you think!

Octopath Traveler has many little and big pros. Its 'HD-02' visual style is beautiful; the music is great; the world is very big, non-linear, and full of things to do; the characters can be customised in many different ways; and, finally, the combat is fast, yet tactical, simple, yet deep. Octopath Traveler is great. However, it also has a couple of cons that for many people will be the deciding factor of whether they should play this or not, and these are, the almost non-existent interaction between its eight characters, its somewhat… artificial vibe, and the lack of a decent main plot.

Octopath Traveler was a pretty good game on Switch and a mediocre game on PC. It's so clearly tailored for Nintendo's portable system that plunking it anywhere else is just going to exacerbate the flaws that it has. Yes, this port "works" okay, but that doesn't mean it works best here. For all Octopath Traveler's promises of harkening back to JRPGs of yore, it forgets we loved those games because we loved to see their characters share the load.

This breathtakingly beautiful revival of SNES-era jRPGs stumbles because of its fragmented main quest but still manages to provide a compelling experience for RPG fans.

Revisiting Octopath Traveler on PC has been a treat, not the least of all because of the available graphics settings that let you tweak the game's iconic hybrid visuals. This is an obvious feature in most PC games, but Octopath's mix of retro pixel art and modern post-processing effects are unlike most games. With one foot in the past and another in the present, adjusting resolution, textures, and lighting effects lets you dictate, to a point, which half of its aesthetic identity is most prominent. It's not a game changer, but it is an appreciated option that gives the PC version a slight edge over the Switch original.

While not the perfect JRPG, Octopath Traveler has too many merits and good qualities that it's impossible for me to not recommend it.

Big point in combat is to break the enemies guard to prevent them from attacking and getting more damage from your attacks, personally I see this as a double-edged sword for example you have bad luck and have none of correct attack styles with you the battle will be drawn out and dangerous.And as everyone has already said the game looks absolutely beautiful, the light, water, trees everything is beautifully made and crafted with love and care, even normally dull areas are worth seeing.But this is a must for a JRPG fan to play, maybe even regular RPG fan, but outside of that, if you don't like grinding and other busy work in games this isn't for you so if you buy this game when you don't like to grind or like RPG's in general don't be surprised when you feel like you wasted your money and don't give a game 0 points because you didn't like 1 aspect of the game.*EDITNow I have spent little over 50 hours which is quite a bit for a working person, I'm nearly done with the games main stuff, got all the side jobs and started finishing stories of the characters, while I do believe that the game can be finished faster due to the reason of my bad habit for over level.While the stories can be a hit or miss none the less it has been good enough, and while as EVERYONE has cried the characters don't truly influence each others stories this was never the aim, and the chats that they had gave me a few laughs every once awhile (most of my favorites had been between Primrose and Tressa)And Primrose became much more usable later on to get some of the advanced jobs, and even more powerful after using one of the advanced jobs with her.But in the end I think 8/10 is a good rating and leave it as that, has been worth the money I have spent unlike a lot of the recent games that give barely 10 hours of gameplay.

The fighting systems is great and you need to play with strategy. The graphics don't bother me, but it could be better in big TVs. The music is one of the best aspects and also the art details in each town, make everything alive.

Octopath Traveler is an extremely satisfying storytelling experience vastly different from other traditional JRPGs out there. The eight stories followed over the course of the game are all compelling in different ways, and each is engrossing in different ways. The combat is simple, yet nuanced, and building party compositions never stops being a fun exercise as the adventure presents each new challenge. The pacing does have some small missteps here and there, especially as the world opens up between each major act, but it's a tiny hurdle in an otherwise magnificent experience.

It has a labyrinthine plot that bravely attempts to give eight characters the same scope and development as eight sole protagonists would get in lesser games. It’s also a game that bravely makes the story all about those characters, with the world, harsh as it can be, almost secondary to the insular unit and their individual arcs. That sheer ambition is all the more impressive because Octopath Traveller uses sprites. Little 2D characters made up of even littler squares. People need to play this game if only to realise that not everything spectacular needs to be photo-real.
