Game Summary

Trading card games conjure up pretty positives images in the minds of many gamers. Perhaps it connects them to an earlier time in their lives when it was all the rage or maybe they're just fanatics for the genre today, but there aren't too many people out there who speak ill of the TCG or CCG phenomenon. Slay the Spire is a card game that's based on both fantasy and comical elements that fuse together to make for a truly interesting and even a bit of a hilarious gaming experience.

The concept of the game is pretty simple: players begin with their deck at the bottom of a colossal tower. From here they must progress upwards towards the peak and will encounter several ghosts, goblins, and other traditional fantasy enemies along the way. The majority of the focus of the game is in the card battling experience itself and players will find it's a pretty unique contribution to the card gaming world.

What makes Slay the Spire unique is the fact enemies will reveal their attacks to players before they happen. Before players make their turn, the computer opponent will have already presented its attack for their next turn and it's up to players to choose what to do with this very useful tidbit of information. The game becomes decidedly thoughtful, cerebral, and in-depth when players are aware that they're about to lose one of their most powerful cards in the deck to a fatal blow unless they're able to do something about it immediately. This sort of approach also wards off a lot of the standard strategic thoughts that are prevalent in the genre. There is no point developing any sort of go-to strategy when encountering monsters because knowing what they'll do in advance throws off even the most careful of planners.

Players will also find that they need a range of cards when dealing with the different levels of the tower, so it is not always in the player's immediate interests to discard those “lesser value” or common cards in their deck as a simple stat boost could mean the difference between an enemy successful wiping out a leading card in the player's deck or being saved from their upcoming attack. Players will need to keep a constant check on their health and other vital statistics in order to make a good run within the tower. These traits do not automatically top themselves up between levels and will depend entirely on random events in the game granting them the necessary power-ups and restorative items to keep players pushing through the tower. These power ups include donuts, cakes, and candy that ironically all provide health points to varying degrees.

Slay the Spire is indeed an excellent addition to any gamer's collection. Its originality and key concepts make the game an enjoyable experience and players needn't hesitate when it comes to adding this one to their libraries right away. The fun is waiting for those who choose to decided to download the game right now.
