The attack mechanic seems interesting enough, but basically this just becomes a button masher- because enemies can only attack in certain directions there are places you can simply stand (e.g. diagonally from them) and wail away/button mash until they die. At least, this is the case with early enemies- later enemies are not similarly stun locked but you don't gain many skills to make up for that fact so it becomes an exercise in opening the menu to open potions. The above is further compounded by the fact that enemies level as you do- so you don't actually ever get any stronger relative to the enemies you are fighting- they will always hit for 1/6 to 1/4 of your health per shot, and you will always hit for 1/10 to 1/20th of their- regardless of whether your weapons are upgraded etc. This means, counterintiuitively, that the best way to beat the game is actually by ignoring almost all of the enemies other than those who drop keys and bosses- meaning you can actually speed run the whole game in just over 10 minutes once you know what you are doing. The game has two crafting systems- blacksmithing and alchemy, but they are mere lip service- everything you need you can buy for much easier than you can craft it, and money will *never* be an issue you for in this game- just farm for long enough to buy up a stack of health potions and you'll be off to the races. The crafting system ingredients can also be either found on monsters or bought- so why not buy stuff- but frankly the upgrade you get to your weapon is worse than the weapons available in the next town some 2 minutes away. This could of course be fixed by fleshing out the crafting system to actually create good quality equipment, but using materials that *only* drop from monsters- giving you a reason to grind/kill things. The story of this game is basically absent- you say a single line through the whole thing, and for the most part the side quests are totally unnecessary- even the one interesting one that nets you new armor doesn't actually do anything for the game.Save your money, and boot up an emulator- the games that this claims to draw from are all vastly superior both in terms of gameplay and storyline, and any nostalgia you get from the 16-bit feel of this game will be gained much more readily from actually revisiting old favorites.A nice attempt, but not even 3 dollars worth of depth.

While I don’t like when developers bring in other games as a selling point (which also sets the bar really high), you can see that the developers had a clear idea of what they wanted to do. Unfortunately they were held back by the limits of RPG Maker, which made the game worse than it should have been. An original battle system, but extremely easy to abuse. And while the game wasn’t designed for story purposes, I can’t forget about how uninteresting the characters were, how clichéd the story was and how extremely disappointing the ending was. As much as I hate to say it, Secret of Magia is a game that needs to get back to the drawing board or get all of its issues fixed, because as of now, it’s a mess.Full article here: http://www.gamerselite.co.uk/secret-of-magia/
