There are two that I genuinely 'liked' and even that almost changed towards the end of the game. All the characters are so obnoxious and they're written mostly terribly. Also, your dialogue choices rarely seem to matter. The game plays out the same regardless. You'll notice this pretty quickly. The game will give you two or three options, but the majority of the time, no matter what you pick, the person you're talking to says something so open-ended and vague that you'll realize it could've "worked" for every choice given. You can tell there are not many genuine 'branches' or dialogue. I will say, towards the end of some of my playthroughs, there were some moments where something would go massively wrong and I actually felt like "damn, if I would've done ___ differently, that wouldn't have happened." And that was nice. Based on the mostly faux dialogue choices, I'm not certain those moments aren't scripted, but if they are, they're done so very well if they had me feeling like it was *MY* fault things ended poorly. That part actually works nicely.Again, genuinely cool concept. I mostly enjoyed my time with it, but it's far from perfect. I'd love to see the devs evolve on this concept and put out something bigger & better in the future.

Unfortunately you realize very quickly it was written by somebody suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It beats you in the brain with it with zero subtlety. To really enjoy this game and the choice aspect you have to view the world through a lens where Trump is a cartoony mustache twirling demonspawn. Every choice in the game boils down to three viewpoints of a basic stereotyped modern American leftist. Option 1: Vote for Hillary because she is not Trump. Option 2: Violently overthrow tyrannical dictator and slaver fascist Trump because he eats babies. Option 3: You are selfish and only care about yourself. Those are your only options as a human in this world and every major choice in the game is one of those three options basically. I kind of did a mix of 2 and 3 and ended up feeling like my choices didn't really matter at all for the finale. None of the themes and simplistic childish political metaphors felt like they were appropriate for this cartoony silly world, and they're definitely outdated if you're playing after 2018 or so. I still finished it because I thought the ending might be better or surprise me but I hated the quick and simple ending and should have expected it. All in all I should have never played it, wasted time. Still, there is a pretty solid game in here, and if you have TDS still you'll probably love it. I liked most of the cartoon characters and atmosphere and music and some of the dialogue. The unique and randomized layout of the game was really great too. I feel like somebody could take the basic framework of this game and make something way better. Either make the story more serious and get intelligent adults to write it, or make it more silly and over the top or just not solely about TDS. There's a way to do this same message and theme with a technique called subtlety that the developers are unfamiliar with

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Road 96 as much as I did. I thought it would be slower and more disconnected. Instead, I experienced a rewarding and deep title where my choices mattered.

Road 96 is a unique experience that truly makes every branching narrative choice a literal gamechanger. It brings the drama, the humor, and the heart to the gameplay table. What it lacks in gameplay variety, it makes up with a replayable story. DigiXart did a superb job with this release.

The team of around 15 developers created a 15-20 hour game that is heavily influenced by the works of Tarantino, the Coen Brothers and Bong Joon-Ho and inspired by many stories, including The Goonies. Although unlikely, I would very much like some extra content featuring the loveable bumbling team of Stan and Mitch. While the game fell a bit short of it’s promises of your outcomes drastically being different because of your choices, it really doesn’t matter. You could strip away all the decision making, and you’d still have a gripping and intense story that you struggle to put down.

Road 96 is a masterpiece in storytelling and depending on your own experience, you may even be moved by its through line of hope, loss, and the ultimate goal of personal freedom. Many of the game's themes haven't directly applied to my life, but Road 96 is an education in empathy and it really makes you feel for the folks out there who are scrambling to get their lives in order because of other people's actions. It's not a perfect game — mechanically things could be improved at times — but its story is about as close to perfect as you could ask for, and for that, we recommend it without a shadow of a doubt.

Within an industry that sometimes struggles to renew itself, especially in the themes it tackles, Road 96 is a daring bet. Even though we freely admit that it is far from perfect, especially as regards its procedural part and its technical aspect, the title nevertheless offers an original experience that goes off the beaten track. This is portrayed by the narrative expressed through the iteration of encounters with the seven key characters. Despite being divisive, this mechanic leads to a rather unique game revolving around intertwined stories that puts the player in the position of a partial spectator of the events occurring before his eyes.

It's a shame that Road 96's great character writing is stuck within such restrictive framing, even if many of its most memorable dialogue sequences only work given that the premise has allowed for this assortment of personalities to intertwine. It doesn't mean that there's no reward for seeing some of them through, but if you're hoping for an introspective look at the complexities of revolting against an oppressive regime, then Road 96 doesn't deliver on that front. It is, however, an enjoyable point-and-click adventure outside of that, with a neat procedural twist that keeps each of your escape attempts entertaining, with dialogue choices that feel purposeful and entertaining minigames to keep things varied.

On the whole, though, Road 96 remains a genuinely innovative game. It’s approach to storytelling and narrative branching is unique. Despite a few relatively minor issues, playing Road 96 is an engaging experience. The moral ambiguity of its characters and their choices feel true to life, even if the game’s conceit is a little less compelling.

We didn’t realise how much we’d missed the episodic story framework of a Telltale game, and Road 96 – while not being from Telltale – is a long-lost cousin to it.

It’s definitely unique, and I hope that DigixArt continues experimenting with the genre.

Road 96 is a fantastic game with a fantastic story. If you are a fan of games story driven games where you make a lot of choices like Life isRoad 96 is a fantastic game with a fantastic story. If you are a fan of games story driven games where you make a lot of choices like Life is Strange and Telltale games, this game may be for you. And if you have had trouble getting into those types of games, this one may still be worth giving a try as it's much more interactive than those types of games usually are.Each segment usually has you making a few choices, interacting with a different character and playing a few "minigames," as one might call them. At one point this involves playing air hockey against one of the other characters and another one of them has you helping a character find the right broadcast signals for their TV by moving the antenna around. These types of interactions really help liven up the game a bit, making it more interactive than your typical "interactive movie" style game. In fact, even though it's a choice driven game, I'd have trouble referring to it as an "interactive movie," because there is so much actual gameplay involved.The characters are easy to connect to, with a lot of strange personalities and humor. You take several trips across the country that the game takes place in and each trip is completely random. You'll never take the same trip twice. This sounds more impressive than it actually is however, as it's mostly pulling from the same 80 or so scenes and putting them in a random order, however the randomness of that order can affect how those scenes progress, giving more reason to come back and replay the game. There's also several endings and I have at this point replayed the story of this game four times trying to get every ending. There is a lot of replay ability here. The story itself is also quite interesting and I find myself intrigued by the political aspects, which are quite heavy within the story.And it would be wrong of me to not mention the soundtrack. I'm not usually one to notice sound tracks in video games but this one is particularly good. I find myself humming the tunes in every day life, even when I'm not playing the game. However, when it comes to the graphics, there's not much particularly impressive. Some of the environments are pretty and nice to look at, but there's a lot of pop-in and the textures, while certainly not horrible, aren't particularly impressive either. Graphically, this almost looks like something out of the Wii/PS3/360 era. I however did not notice any issues with frame rate or performance and it seemed to do quite well on the Switch.All in all, I was impressed that such an amazing game could have been made by such a small team and this game is the perfect example of how good an indie game can be. The main story is probably about 10-15 hours, but there's so many reasons to go back and at this point I've probably spent closer to 30-40 hours on the game. Would strongly recommend to almost anyone.

Toothless as political commentary, and with its, supposedly, big focus on choice being almost non-existent, it would be alright to assume that this isn't a big recommendation - and yet it is. Digixart's anti-fascist indie might not be as good it thinks when it comes to politics, and the choose-your-own-adventure layer under it all is paper-thin at best, but simply as an experience, as a road trip across a beautiful land, filled with interesting (to say the least) characters, yes, this is one of the best indies that have been released this past month, warts and all. Its replay value is, unfortunately, very low, but do yourself a favour, and try it out when you get the chance. Road 96 is a flawed but undoubtedly memorable journey.

The only issue with this was sometimes your sight was wobbly when making a choice it could sometimes make you pick the wrong thing.One major issue I had was sometimes when you start with a new character the first encounter could only end with the choice that depleted your energy and ends with getting arrested. That was frustrating.But overall, I hope to see more story-driven games like this.

The official description of Road 96 promises “thousands of roads across the authoritarian nation of Petria.” One might think that this is a truly non-linear game with a highly replayable campaign, but in reality you’ll get one full playthrough, with maybe a smidge more. Sadly the writing for half of the characters were not decent(the Yo Kid was made by a sadist) while the other half were pretty interesting and fun to be around with(truck driver goes beep beep). The mechanics if you can even call them that are pretty basic and there is not a lot of things to do with them , the game is incredibly easy especially when you learn lockpicking which makes the choices in the game very easy since there are barely any negative consequences. Story had a pretty decent start and an alright middle but for me the ending was pretty sappy ,predictable and boring and the choices you make in the entire game have zero consequences (well almost zero some minor I guess). I would've actually preferred it if we followed a long journey of a single hitchhiker and the characters he meets while trying to survive and with more (way more) polished mechanics. The soundtrack was pretty good and the voice acting was also well for the most part. I still think the game is worth the decent price of 20 bucks.

ROAD 96 is so much more than an indie point-and-click. It’s a solid recommendation despite its obvious limits. This small world created by Yoan Fanise and DigixArt, suggests that there is still a lot to see from the Indie scene. What else can I say about this game? Perhaps whoever has lived it will understand, because for me ROAD 96 is Jeremy by Pearl Jam; Something in the Way by Nirvana; Nutshell by Alice in Chains; Firestarter by The Prodigy and 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins, all at the same time and made into video game form.

Road 96 offers a non-Manichean adventure on the roads, looking for a brighter future on the other side of the border. Despite some uneven mini-games and some brutal cuts in its narration, the game still offers some interesting cast and landscapes, carried by a strong soundtrack with delightful 90's vibes. Too bad this Switch port suffers from such a big downgrade once grabbed on the go.
