RetroMania Wrestling looks like WWF WrestleFest, plays (a bit) like Fire Pro and has a wide variety of entertaining arenas to play in. However, the tiny roster, lack of creation modes, lack of online and brief single-player experiences mean you're really going to need to be interested in local multiplayer if you're going to be playing this one for a long time. To give it the Cena test: it's got our respect for going old-school and it'll get loyalty from the cult following it'll inevitably gain, but it still needs a bit more hustle before it's the finished product, whereas just now it feels like The Prototype.

There is a surprising amount of move variety amongst each competitor and the learning curve isn't too extreme. There's even a difficulty meter in the options. But, like any wrestling game, you will eventually encounter duplicate moves or wrestlers performing moves they've never actually performed. The lack of online at launch and the paltry options of wrestlers available at launch detract things a bit here, and I would've liked a bit more from presentation in the way of a post match celebration or something along those lines (right now at the end of a match in versus mode, you're taken right back to the main menu), but of the 16 wrestlers available, all are well known to any wrestling fan who follows the independent scenes and/or New Japan, though if you're just a WWE fan, Johnny Retro (John Morrison) and the Road Warriors may be the only wrestlers you know (add the Blue World Order to that if you're an Attitude Era fan). The lack of online and the small roster (DLC is on its way including Impact superstar Chris Bey and other well known names) are definitely big detracting points but they're things that the developers have said during the dev process will be addressed after launch so I'm willing to give them their time. This is by no means a world beater or 2K Killer, but it wasn't meant to be either and it definitely beats the pants off of Battlegrounds for $10-$15 less as well.

While fans of Wrestlefest and other Technos greats will see the similarity in design quickly it nods to many more wrestling games of the past. As a fan of Mat Mania in the arcade as well as many others over the years. There’s a lot to offer here and RetroSoft is tossing around ideas for more modes and such as well as coming soon wrestlers. For what this game is, and indie developed wrestling game dating back to 10 years ago to a fast track development in about 2 years time, it’s simply a must have for fans of all the wrestling games of my generation. Wrestling isn’t what is was back in the early days of Wrestlemania and the decades to follow. Over time the huge stars and excitement of the wrestling scene became watered down and so did the games. RetroMania Wrestling I ripped through all the achievements in a couple hours as a veteran of button smashing and up, down, left right formula master. I love the CPU vs CPU vs matches and found my favorite Character the Big Meanie can dominate the squared circle for those who may struggle with the retro control. In my mind this game is exactly what it should be and I’m excited to see what the RetroSoft team has in store in the future for its fans. Fans must rumble on over to the Xbox digital games store and smash the buy button like you just put your opponent in a figure 4 leg lock. Well done RetroSoft well done indeed….

RetroMania Wrestling is the perfect sequel to a classic. Not only does it maintain the essence of WWF Wrestlefest but it also develops the mechanics adding depth and strategy. Although there are a ton of gameplay options, the lack of online play and the niche roster may discourage some players. However, even with few missing elements, this is one of the best wrestling games currently available and a must for fans of the sport.

Perhaps the initial asking price is a bit high, then - we think $19.99 would have been the sweet spot for RetroMania Wrestling at launch - but it's still nevertheless an enjoyable game. The art style is fantastic, the gameplay is classic 90s style fun, and you can tell it's been made by people who really love the business of professional wrestling. It's not going to replace WWE 2K's series for casual fans, but hardcore wrestling aficionados might just fall in love with it.

Retromania has only one instance of timing based mechanics that you have to keep doing, which happens right as you lock up with an opponent. While the Fire Pro series can have a string of timing mechanics to do more advanced moves and whatnot. To Sum it up, if in Retromania you want to pull off more advanced ring style moves, like even special tag moves, its simply about getting your opponent into the right position. (as well as having your momentum meter high enough but this is easy to understand and increase)Even if you're not a fan of wrestling but enjoy a mix of fighting and "beat em up" games you will probably have fun with this too. One of the reasons I love wrestling games over playing a traditional fight game is that the best wrestling games usually don't lock the more advanced moves behind an absurd button combination. As for Retromania it has a simple, but fleshed out grapple system to where you have light, medium, heavy attack options that you gain access to by combo-ing, lets say, a light attack with one of the direction buttons will do a different move. So you not only have several grapple options per light attack, you have a slew of moves for medium and heavy grapples too. This whole system works in conjunction with the momentum meter, which raises from L/M/H as your pound on your opponent or successfully taunt without be punched in the face before you finish it.As for game modes and whatnot, in a lot of ways the game is what you make it, in that you have around 7 core match based options ranging from simple 1v1's, tag matches up to 4vs4, free for all matches, and an absurd Rumble match which allows a bunch of wrestlers in the ring at the same time. Most of these match options can also be tweaked further, like adding a Cage on top of the ring that you can actually climb and perform moves off of, or slam your opponent into.All in all, I think Retromania is great, it borrows some of the best elements from classic 16bit wrestling games, most of which never were released in the USA back in the day. The developers have also shown that they want to keep improving the game by adding more gameplay options, wrestlers and so on. Even right after the day 1 launch they were already tweaking and improving different things based on community feedback.

Despite its dated aesthetics, RetroMania Wrestling can still bring the pain. Unfortunately that struggle translates to issues both in and out of the ring. Sometimes, it's important to consider why design decisions were abandoned in the past, rather than meticulously recreating frustrating mechanics for modern audiences in the name of authenticity.

However, I am having a blast playing the game. It really reminds me of the days of putting a quarter in a machine and not really knowing how to play. Over many quarters and discussions with friends we figured out the moves and lasted longer and longer per quarter. RetroMania brings that feel back to the PC. The first few matches I lost and lost bad. As I started to figure out the timing and understand how the AI worked I was able to win more and more. After about 5-6 hours of play I was able to beat 10 Pounds of Gold and Story Mode. That still leaves me a lot of game time left to learn new characters and try different types of matches, rules and difficulties.Overall, I highly recommend this to any wrestling and wrestling game fan. For casual gamers if button mashing and quick matches are your thing you will get a lot of value out of the game. I have over 25 hours into this game and am still enjoying it. The support from the developer has been fantastic. They have already released a new version based on user feedback and I am confident they will continue to build and improve the game. They have already announced at least one free DLC pack and additional story mode content. I look forward to playing this game for a long time.

While scrolling though some of the reviews and comments on steam you start to realize a pattern concerning the price, and in my personal opinion I think it a great price for this game. For a game that continues the legacy of that of WrestFest, and for all the hard work the developers have been going though(especially with everything that been going on in the world) I believe it is perfect price. All that combined with cooperative developers makes this game a great game, while not the best, there are still plenty of updates and DLC's hopefully being added to the game to really strengthen this game, into it's full potential.

My rating would surely be 10/10, if the game was cheaper, or, if the game would have more to offer. really recommend playing Retromania Wrestling, but price is just not right.

Retrosoft clearly understands the kind of game it wanted to make in RetroMania, and aesthetically, it succeeds. Gaining the momentum in a match that's in full swing, and keeping it until victory, is exhilarating. But as of now, RetroMania perpetuates aspects of pro wrestling that are better left in the past.
