Ponpu Reviews & Ratings
Ponpu is from developer Purple Tree and publisher Zordix is a classic example of never judge a book by its cover. On the face of it, Ponpu isPonpu is from developer Purple Tree and publisher Zordix is a classic example of never judge a book by its cover. On the face of it, Ponpu is yet another Xbox One ID@Xbox game. What sets it apart is the style and execution. It’s all very well done. Starting with the story mode to get the feel of the game down before moving on to the most excellent mutliplayer. The movement, universal abilities, and unique Ponpu bomb types you’ll use to stop the evil Duck-God from resetting the universe will feel right at home for Bomberman fans. This involves bombing your way through six zones, each with distinctive environments, enemies, and traps, before taking out a massive boss and edging closer to battling the Duck-God itself. For solo players, there’s a lengthy and challenging Story Mode on offer. However, the basic gameplay loop of completing several levels to unlock the boss encounter does grow stale after a while without any real sense of in game progression. Once you’ve conquered the single player mode and defeated the bosses and the evil Duck-God, dive straight into the multiplayer mayhem and truly see where the game shines. It’s hard not to enjoy the game but I found myself reminded very much of Bomberman and in comparison the game isn’t quite as good but it still manages to be a formidable offering with lots of fun for player to enjoy on their Xbox One consoles.
Borrowing from the famous Bomberman games, Ponpu delivers the core experience with a unique art style. Its biggest strength are the multiplayer and boss fights. The single player story mode, however, is rather bland and has no exploration nor any goodies to unlock and thus, becomes rather repetitive.
Although I had fun playing Ponpu, it made me want to dive back into Bomberman as it isn't quite as satisfying as Hudson's classic.
With instantly gratifying multiplayer game types and also a substantial single player mode to top it off, Ponpu combines entertaining gameplay with an excellent stylistic presentation like very few games can.
