Summary
Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an epic fantasy role-playing adventure in a unique and deadly world. Fight to complete up to three game-winning quests. Explore a massive nation of tunnels and caverns, seeking out eighty towns and dungeons. Master over 50 spells and battle disciplines and hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts.
Storyline
You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.
The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, who misbehaves, who doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.
But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or even, if you dare, revenge on the surface-dwellers who tried to destroy you.

The graphics in-game are tolerable but there are some really awesome paintings that never get old and are pure dynamite. I found myself a little less "lost in the experience of the game" while playing this in comparison to Geneforge, and I'm not sure why. The characters are real or funny and refreshing. The game is absolutely huge and took me 100 hours or more to complete everything with one party. As with most RPGs I play, the items aren't designed to the fullest they could have been and don't feel like they add enough to the combat or gameplay, although there is one item that significantly changes your experience with the game. The writing is above average and sometimes great. Love the story. Anyone who complains about the lack of music or sound effects needs to put on a self-made playlist, which is better than every videogame soundtrack possible. Skills and spells are lackluster but still fun. The game is designed beautifully for having fun and not wasting time.

Even though it shares the same mechanics and graphics as avadon this game feels more like ultima or morrowind to me. Easy to get into, interesting setting and a ton of freedom and conent. The plotline never fails, the various cave and things never bore, it's very fun. HOWEVER. I did not like the outdoor travel. Part of the fun of playing Avernum 6 (the one a played before this) was traveling between cities and finding a bunch of secret caves and small groups of enemies. You can still do that now, but it's flare seems to have been taken away somehow.
