Thymesia is a Soulslike that rewards aggression and precision; more methodical or sword and board players might want to look elsewhere.

No, absolutely no way but given that the game was made by indie devs that are famed for the Worms series back in the 90s and early 00s, they've come a very long way and should be proud of this cult gem.

It's alright. It's a lot like Sekiro with the deflection/parry combat systems with a unique twist on damaging the enemies but it feels asIt's alright. Decent variety due to the different paths you can take with your character and the plague weapon mechanic is quite cool and a pleasure to use but the game seems to lack something. I can't quite say why but the core combat felt incomplete. As for level design, it's pretty good visually and it has the core philosophy of a souls-like with shortcuts and whatnot but it feels lacking, that's not to say that it isn't enjoyable cutting a path to the next boss or bonfire?(I forgot the name) but it's very rough. The bosses feel like the weakest part. There is not much variety in each boss's moveset and they seem to be poorly balanced. It's far from perfect but provides an enjoyable experience for 5-10 hours. Overall: fun souls-like but very rough round the edges and mashes too many mechanics that don't entirely work together. Great if on sale, alright if not.

Even though the setting and many gameplay elements in Thymesia aren’t new for Soulslike-enthusiasts, the game’s enjoyable combat and progression show that the developers understand the genre. The versatile plague weapons are fun to collect and use, while the compact skill system allows for useful fine-tuning when bosses get difficult. And while they rarely do that, most of them offer unique and varied encounters. But the particularly hard bosses do exhibit some of the game’s wonky difficulty balancing and sometimes imprecise gameplay mechanics. Also, Thymesia isn’t a very big or replayable game, though the fair asking price somewhat alleviates that.

While it undoubtedly borrows a lot from the game that influenced it the most—Bloodborne—Thymesia does more than enough to end up being little more than a pale imitation. It has quite a few great ideas that turn combat into a fun, fast-paced affair, and the story premise is quite clever. Even its story trappings of a plague in a medieval city play quite well into the core gameplay, with the Reave ability being especially fun to play with.

Thymesia is a very interesting game, with combat and gameplay that will remind us of Sekiro, but with its own personality. In addition, the design of maps and bosses are spectacular, as is their artistic design. However, to the soundtrack, the lack of epic nature.

Bottomline, Thymesia does not stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the giants of the genre, but it’s a great game in its own right. Though it falters some in areas like presentation, story, and level design, the combat and upgrade systems are a lot of fun, even if the enemy variety gets to feeling a little thin by the end. Personally, I hope we see a lot more from Overboard Studios and Corvus in the future as there is a lot of potential to be realized yet.

Thymesia seamlessly blends the fast, often frantic combat of games like Devil May Cry with a more thoughtful approach, giving the players the tools to quickly leap between enemies, while strategically switching between light and heavy attacks, as well as flashy specials. While regular combat is often a fun power fantasy, the game truly shines in its boss fights, where two equally deadly warriors dance around each other parrying and trading blows. The only sore spot in the gameplay is that there isn’t already a Thymesia 2 to sink my teeth into.

There are some really neat ideas here, for sure, with the game's plague weapons providing lots of variety in how you go about dealing with your enemies, but unnecessary and awkward elements such as an overly tricky deflection system and dodge mechanics that need tightening up sully the overall combat experience. With a little more TLC this could have been a banger, but as things stand it's a fairly average effort that's hard to recommend if you're not a huge fan of the genre.

Thymesia is an interesting action-RPG with good ideas. Unfortunately not all of them are developed properly. As the first game of Overborder Studio, it turns out to be a good debut, hoping that this experience will serve to smooth out all the edges on the narrative and game balance in the future.

Even with these blemishes and moments where the admiration for what’s come before gets in the way of basic consistency and much-needed fluidity, OverBorder Studio have at least landed in a much better position with a foundation that’s challenging and entertainingly so.

Certain sections of Thymesia contain the spark of something greater, the hint at the unrealized potential which was sorely missed with this release.

Thymesia does more than enough to make its way out of the shadow of Bloodborne. It offers some fun levels to go around killing enemies in, and the combat is fast-paced, responsive, and most importantly, a lot of fun. Even its skill tree has some great ideas. This might not be the game for those who don’t like a challenge, but for those who do, Thymesia is excellent.

A welcome change of scenery to the faster strain of Soulslikes, Thymesia gets straight to the point of sword and claw without lasting any longer than necessary.

If more of the game had the degree of polish that reaving does, the game could have been something special. The end result is a small-scale game with lofty aspirations that miss the mark. Stealing specials is great, but everything surrounding that is unimpressive.
