Whilst I wouldn’t go as far as to say the game is terrible, I will say that it’s worse than that: it’s boring. A below average platformer that looks and plays like a relic from 15 years ago, yet wants to charge you €34.99 for a mere five hours of mediocrity. I’ve definitely played worse this year, but I’ve definitely played a better – and that includes Agony (which I’ll be reviewing next time!). Skully has its heart in the right place but can't quite execute things correctly. The movement is zippy when you're in ball form, but you're not going to find too many things to challenge you. The puzzle mechanics are good, but you won't have to think too hard about your next move. It's a fine experience that's not too enthralling due to its unevenness, so it's difficult to stick it out to the end.

I feel Skully had huge potential but due to the overall low quality (dated visuals, samey levels, poor voice acting, terrible camera) I can’t recommend it. If you choose to play it for the story (which is actually quite good), remember to use a gamepad, because keyboard and mouse controls are horrible.

Skully has a lot of good qualities about it; beautiful graphics, charming characters and I had an overall good gameplay experience. While I constantly struggled with the rolling controls, I still found reasons to enjoy my experience. Skully is not at all a bad game whatsoever and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a great time killer. I think for now, I'll keep rolling through the levels and explore some more!

In all, Skully is a quirky and entertaining romp with fun puzzles and platforming, amusing character interactions, a good story, beautiful music, and awe-inspiring landscapes. Easily an entertaining game that this reviewer can and will gladly come back to time and time again, no bones about it.

If you are really, really into the platformer genre and have enough patience, Skully may be a good choice for you. But even then, the 30$ asking price seems too much for the amount of content Skully is offering.

Skully is a simple platformer that boasts fun characters, a great soundtrack, and creative gameplay; all of which provide a rewarding experience by the end of it. However, good things only last for a while, since the quality of the story drops off significantly by the end, and the poor music looping quickly becomes boring. And yet, it’s an underrated gem that you’ll likely want to platinum as soon as it’s done.

The story was interesting, but the jarring, still frame cutscenes detracted from what was going on. Given the smooth and beautiful graphics of the game and the clean art of the still frames, I felt jipped every second of every cutscene. The gameplay is back and forth between fast-paced rolling and platforming in your skull form, then solving puzzles with one of your Golem forms. The platforming is bland, and I never felt like my abilities were being tested, in some segments even used. I felt like so much more could have been done with how fast you roll, and the incredible inertia, and gravity physics that are woven into the game. The Golems are limited in what they're capable of, each with their own couple of abilities. The puzzles relied too heavily on mixing these abilities. Scattered around the world are leaves, they seem to line out the paths, but don't have any real bearing on gameplay. They unlock character art, and thats all. So much more could have been done here, it felt lacking, even in the final stretches, when things started to get challenging. Skully is an interesting journey to take if you can get past the cutscenes, and lackluster platforming.

Skully is a game that is easily forgettable and hardly recommendable. It is something that if you got free through a Games with Gold you would be encapsulated for all of 30 minutes and then likely never play again. It had promise with its quirky story and unique mechanics, but it never capitalizes on any of them, making it feel like yet another game lost in the ether of releases in 2020.

I hate being that guy who basically says "this isn’t the game I wanted to play", but in Skully’s case it seems the most appropriate conclusion. So much of the game concentrates on mechanics that were rightfully abandoned and too little fulfils the marble rolling promise of its early footage. Looks like I’m still waiting, like a strangely bearded Cinderalla, to go to the ball.

Intentions are good and the game has attractive ideas. However, the design of its scenarios, well thought out but poorly finished puzzles and the lack of replayability make Skully a minor title within its genre. It is not a bad experience and the combination of abilities between its different forms is something worth exploring. However, it leaves me with the feeling that he could have given so much more of himself. It is one of those enjoyable games in which there are no flagrant failures but is satisfied, too, with sufficiency.

Playing as the skull does tend to feel sloppy at times due to sensitivity of the stick-control and how prone the naked-noggin is to water, but when you’re introduced to Skully’s other forms the game opens up nicely and offers you a scenic tour around an ancient naturalistic landscape that’s hard to peel your eyes away from. Skully is not breaking any ground or pushing any envelopes, but it’s not stationary either. It’s just a pleasing and simple platformer to be enjoyed, and a modest worthwhile curio that certainly deserves a look.

Skully has everything it needs to impose himself as a mix between a frantic platformer like Marble Blast Ultra and an original take on Metroidvania genre, but it wastes too much time before showing its true potential. The lack of enemies and situations to deal with does not help to keep you engaged until the game unleashes all its features, and it is a shame because it’s a pretty game, and also very responsive to player input. Anyone willing to bear with the first few hours will be rewarded with fascinating gameplay.

I was unexpectedly charmed by Skully. With some excellent controls and a story told earnestly, I was gripped throughout its entire run. Sure, its shorter time might turn off some and its collectables aren’t that worthwhile, but it more than makes up for that. It doesn’t waste time and it makes for a pleasant romp. Suffice to say, I’m curious to see what Finish Line Games makes next.

Skully on Xbox One is a fun game with creative elements, and if you love platformers and want to try something new, then Skully is worth checking out.
