But once you find the hacks around the bad CPU, a win is guaranteed every time.Online it looks like this HUT is just a cash grab. Embarrassing from a game studio to stoop this low for taking money from their small fan base. The player data base is reaching at this point with of a lack of good ideas, with fog of war and this odd potential system. But honestly, what are these developers supposed to do with a 12 month cycle.The graphics were decent-ish. Assuming due to its Frostbite jump from the ignite engine. And the front end took a robust set of options and data and presented it nicely, albeit sluggish on my PS4. For these two I give this game a 1.

The player systems, puck handling, AI are all improved. Anyone who has been playing hockey and the video games for as long as I have, knows that this game should be rated 7 at the lowest. Overall, NHL 22 is a solid next-gen effort for the series, and points to bigger things to come. While longtime fans may be tired of the samey gameplay, there’s enough reason here to believe that EA has plans for the near future. Let’s hope they’re less about novelty modes and more about deeper presentation overhauls and a richer singleplayer experience.

It’s incorporated new mechanics in X-Factor players, graphically it’s improving and the gameplay is a mixture of fluid simulation and fast paced arcade which is a great balance. However, Be A Pro mode is still stagnant, there is a heavy reliance on spending real money on card packs in Ultimate Team and there just doesn’t feel like enough new additions to get excited by.

Aside from minor changes, everything else is pretty much in the same state that it was last year, except you can now pay the next-gen premium price for it. NHL 22 is still the best hockey game you can buy (mostly due to the lack of other options), but I'd strongly advise against it if you have played any other NHL title in the past few years. The series has been stagnating, and NHL 22 doesn't indicate any will to make meaningful changes, which is a shame because this would've been the perfect cut-off point to do something new and interesting.

It's odd that it took EA this long to bring their flagship Frostbite engine to their NHL franchise, but now that it's here in NHL 22, the wait was certainly worth it, as the game has never looked or played better.

This should have been NHL 22’s coming-out party. Everything was in place for this to be a transformative season on a fresh new platform. Unfortunately, the next-generation jump feels more like a stop-gap solution than a proper evolution. If you already have last year’s installment, I would be hard-pressed to find a legitimate reason to make the jump. Hopefully, the next outing will focus on bringing a more innovative offering to the rink, because lord knows this time around isn’t going to set the stadium on fire.

NHL games have gotten stale in years past (15-18 come to mind in some ways). Over the past few releases, EA Vancouver has taken it to newer heights and this is a leap in a great direction. I haven’t been this excited to try and run a franchise into the ground because I have no idea what I am doing, or go pro and take on the greats for the cup.

My impression is that this is more of a port from one engine to another and very minor changes to the game have been made. 40 online games in I've had 15 or so break by syncing bugs or disconnects not related to a player quitting. Just like every year early in the season the game isn't ready. It is essentially the same game as every year with a roster update on a different engine. Every year the experience of the cut and paste software is the same. This is not a new programming build. You still see 90+ skate players being beat by 84/85 skaters. You still do not get consistent face off offsets except with a few players especially Bergeron. You still see that the players from 5 games ago still act like they did then as if the game has never been updated yearly. I was pumped that the switch to next generation would mean the dread of all the past deficiencies of the game would be removed and we could see an evolution of this series. Alas that dream is dead. You still have the meta game controlling the gameplay as much as the participants involved. You cannot strategically dump or chase or control fatigue or generally use any strategy than from previous years. The new X factors are just another smoke and mirror attempt in advertising to make you feel the game is fixed...but it's not. It's just a new gimmick to fool everyone and we will still be requested to send EA video footage so they can take a look at what's going on. Year after year the same ruse. If you enjoyed previous years this one is a bit more shiny but if you dropped out sick of the gameplay degradation stay away and possibly just give up on this series. It's not fixed. I will say that fairness adjustments do not seem as pronounced in this version and that's a huge plus but as I've learned from experience EA will change tuning to suit thier needs. One big thing I want to focus on is the X factors. They add a nice touch making the potential for better gameplay but they are gimmicks. In my experience I have activated various skills and they activate but do not follow thru. I've come to the conclusion they must be an extremely minimal stat boost on one skill making them unnoticeable and irrelevant. The net result of Nhl 22 can best be described as any other previous version of the game with possibly less tilt/fairness adjustments. That's a step forward but by no means a fix to the dreaded game. At best it's a better tuner adjustment. My conclusion is this game is never changed from its initial release on the ps4 except for yearly variances in the game tuning only.

NHL 22 on current-generation consoles is the best NHL experience that has released in some time. It also provides the biggest change from last gen to current gen consoles of any EA Sports game yet. It still has its issues at its core with how the AI plays and there are bugs that crop up often, but the overall experience feels fresh and the game looks much improved. The lighting and reflections provide the biggest boost while Frostbite brings more realism to player faces and jerseys. I feel more could have been included with Frostbite on the physics side, but this will come in the future. While the modes remain the same, the updates to each are sufficient and the addition of Superstar X-Factors allows for a game-changing experience. Online, if not getting disconnected, generally works as it needs to. NHL 22 offers the right feel for a new console that a lot of sports games haven’t provided in the last two generations.

Animations look notably improved from last year, the visuals and player likeness definitely get an upgrade, and the game finally slows down a bit more in simulation and competitive modes, which makes the game feel much more realistic to the game compared to past years. Additionally, things like cross-crease one-timer are more difficult to pull off this year without user skill and the penalties have been tuned to reduce the amount of tripping calls on poke checks (which is a welcome addition, although there have been more interference penalties from my experience). The second big addition was X-Factors, which also suit the NHL series far better than Madden. Stars like Matthews, MacKinnon, and McDavid actually feel far different from your average 3rd or 4th liner, which I can't say was the case in years past. We also will FINALLY be getting roster sharing in a little bit, which is a long-needed feature that surely increases the longevity of the title post-NHL season.
