Foregone lured me with its beautiful art style just to disappoint me with repetitive levels, shallow story, uninteresting combat and total lack of originality.

You can only change the properties of the item you use in side quests. Bosses are very easy. Level design is bad. Trouble finding secrets. The graphics are complex, most of the time you can't see the platforms. When you die, you can lose all your money with heavy penalties if you don't get it back. The story of the game is not interesting. A game that used dead cells and souls-like metroidvania features but failed.

With stunning pixel-art graphics, solid combat, and a considerable amount of character customization, you can easily sink a few hours into Foregone, maybe more if you delve into more challenging difficulty levels. However, if you’re looking for a complex Metroidvania full of backtracking and deep lore, I would look elsewhere. Foregone may have left me feeling a bit cold, but if you’re looking for some straightforward side-scrolling action, I suspect it will nicely scratch that itch!

Despite its style and engagement, it is still pretty formulaic in its execution. Though it lends its own spin to a classic video game genre, fans of the 2D platformer will notice some cues going back to the SNES days. Foregone is a metroidvania with all the necessary ingredients that will take you to live a thrilling adventure from start to finish with amazing pixel art and a story that will surprise you.

Quite simply, Foregone, like almost every other game developed by Big Blue Bubble, is weak, shallow, and not worthy of your time and money.

Foregone is a solid entry in the metroidvania genre, and the limited options in combat are slick enough. It does what it needs to do — the problem is that there are many better examples of this structure that would have to be recommended first.

It’s clear that Foregone struggles to define itself within the genre on a surface level. In practice, however, the complementary elements and design choices mesh in a way that makes it feel quite unique. It is unlikely to evoke passion from those who already dislike the genre, but there is enough value to justify giving it a shot simply for the fluidity of its gameplay.

While there is some good gameplay to be found in Foregone, you’ll spend a lot of your playtime with it wishing you were playing some of the inspirations it appears to be pulling from. That’s a real shame, because there are some highlights in Foregones playtime, but they don’t stand out enough for me to properly recommend it to anybody.

The name of the game is simplicity, but Foregone contradicts itself with randomized loot, an immense difficulty spike, and a hard turn away from "play as you like" after committing to that formula. Foregone is a copycat title through and through with a couple good ideas that are encrusted with careless execution.

Big Blue Bubbles’ latest addition to the Metroidvania genre is a really enjoyable game that I had a ton of fun with. While it may be yet another Dead Cells clone, its weighty combat, challenging foes, slick maneuverability, and gorgeous aesthetics do just enough to set Foregone apart from its contemporaries. So if mad-dashing, action-adventure platforming is your niche, then picking this one up will be well worth your time.

Foregone is a more linear take on the Metroidvania formula, with plenty of loot and skills to unlock along the way. Once you have all those skills it becomes a lot of fun to run, jump and dash through the attractive environments, defeating enemies with your range of weapons and skills as you go.

The Story is fairly unique, holding it's own lore, but the game play doesn't meet the same caliber. Watching the enemies and the hero move is a treat, but actually playing doesn't bring the same flow. There are is such a slim weapon variety you never feel like you're getting something new. The upgrades don't feel any more powerful, and the static map feels more random and disorienting than procedurally generated ones. Combat doesn't feel satisfying at all. The one awesome mechanic that is brought to the table is your projectile weapon has a limited number of rounds that are replenished by successful Melee attacks, forcing you to uses everything you've got to keep a balance in your power. I never truly felt like I was powerful at any point, nor did I feel like the enemies posed enough challenge to make me feel weak either. Foregone isn't the worst Metroidvania to come out this year, but it's also not a great one either.

All in all Forgone has been super fun for me. Sure, I could nit-pick at some very minor changes but what Big Blue Bubble has made is something awesome and that all platforming fans should give it a look. I think it provides the right amount of challenge for all gamers approaching it.

The fact that it manages to stand out from the pack is a high recommendation indeed. This is a fast, fluid and beautiful action title that will keep you playing until the very end. I may never be able to retrieve that planet orbiting pair of socks, but it was totally worth it.

Don’t give in to the easy comparisons with Dead Cells - this is a sumptuous, furious and rock-hard romp that’s better seen as a partner to that brilliant game.

Its greatest achievement is its difficulty curve that always demands more of us but never resorts to the old tricks of artificial difficulty to extend the duration of the adventure.
