Tournament mode is unplayable since the release and hasn't been addressed, career mode has ridiculous amount of bugs and glitches and they screwed up things, that were working well in previous editions. The game still regularly creates situations where it feels like the game is cheating against the player. This is especially prevalent in Career Mode, which has been sorely neglected this year. The game will frequently, and arbitrarily, create artificial difficulty through forcing the player's team to make mistakes DEEPLY uncharacteristic of the team or specific player. Impressive sprinters like Lionel Messi or Heung-min Son struggle to get past defenders with an AVG in the mid-70s. Maestro crossers like Kevin De Bruyne will sport accuracy befitting of a Sunday league winger. The list goes on.This blatant handicapping has gotten worse over the past few iterations of the franchise, and EA continues to insult its player base's intelligence by denying there is any presence of scripting or momentum shifting code. Regardless of whether whatever system is causing this was added intentionally or not, EA has summarily failed to remedy how often this game franchise creates infuriating situations where the player does not feel in control of their own team.FUT is still the only feature that gets development time, which is to be expected when the majority of the audience is 20-somethings spending hundreds, or even thousands of dollars a month on packs for players. I will not be purchasing any more titles in the FIFA franchise in the foreseeable future. The only reason this is not a 0/10 is that the game actually launches and can be played. For now, FIFA 20 is better than the previous edition in terms of gameplay, and that’s somewhat sufficient. But it dropped the excellent The Journey single-player only to replace it with a stale mode. With a little luck, we might get to play Volta outside of FIFA when it belongs. To sum it up, as Comrade Dyatlov points out, it’s not great, not terrible. For any other game, this would be a bad thing, but for FIFA’s microtransaction model, it’s everything that Electronic Arts hopes for.

Delivering another strong outing, FIFA 20 proves once more that it's a football game truly to be reckoned with. There are issues, but few are serious enough to really mar the overall experience. Ultimately, FIFA 20 is fantastic, its new VOLTA Football mode being a particular joy, while FUT proves endlessly compelling yet again.

I almost only play Ultimate team. The new accomplishment feature is a nice feature. But that's almost it for me. Every game I play I seem to want to pull my hear out of my head. Tackling is now almost completely impossible to time properly. Speed is awarded in big fashion. You can no longer play great but rather slow attackers. I've tried Lewandowski and I would rather play another attacker with 70 overall rating and 95 pace. And Lewandowski is not even that slow. I also rage quit every other game over the bad keeper movement and sheer amount of mistakes the keepers make. Every game a goal is scored against me from a keeper bounce back after a save. This has gotten worse since last year. I think I might consider quitting this game for good. It seems ea could learn a thing or two from Konami these days. The game play of PES just seems to be much better.

With unsurprisingly shady surprise mechanics and little to no significant movement on the pitch, FIFA 20 is a stopgap entry that only has Volta to boast about.

FIFA has never been better, at least on the pitch. Volta is fun in small doses, but those looking to play something other than Ultimate Team will be inevitably disappointed in the lack of variation in offline modes. Those who are in it for the thrill of opening a pack and getting a star player, or who simply love collecting cards and playing football matches with their new additions will find a lot to love, at least until next season when it all begins again.

Customization to modes like Volta, career mode and Pro Clubs is a step in the right direction, but FIFA 20 does little to flesh out features like press conferences and make them have more of a real impact. Players will quickly realize how similar the interface is to FIFA 19 in several modes and will be yearning for the franchise to receive a complete overhaul. With Sony and Microsoft preparing for next-generation consoles, players can only hope that the FIFA franchise also decides to evolve and significantly revamps the single-player experience next year.

FIFA may be more popular than ever, but FIFA 20 is a standard bearer with no clear focus. The gameplay comes up just short of carrying the title, and while Ultimate Team is engaging in its own way, it’s the same grind it’s always been. The next-generation of home consoles is approaching, and I can’t tell if EA has run out of ideas or is running out the clock.

However invested you become, however much enjoyment you take from competency and victory, however many times you watch that replay back of the Volta goal you scored by flicking it backwards over a defender, losing another with an elastico and backheeling it into the net (at least double figures now), FIFA 20’s biggest failing is in producing an enjoyable football match.

FIFA 20 is fun, which is the most important thing. The developers in charge of gameplay have done just about all they can do to make this title a joy on the virtual pitch. It’s shortcomings are because of a lack of innovative improvements to core modes. That keeps it as a really good game, but a notch below great.

I think it’s critical that publishers and studios offer more than just tweaks to gameplay and new lines of dialogue. EA Vancouver and Romania have done quite a bit in that effort this season. VOLTA is an adept component with surprising depth. Yes, it is ostensibly inspired by 2012 Street and borrows heavily from its bag of toe flicking tricks. But the iteration isn’t chintzy. It’s implementation isn’t some hasty, tacked-on remastering. The mode is fleshed out, thought out, and plays out effectively. It also seems to set an influential tone of fun across the 20 landscape. This is the most enjoyment I’ve had kicking it around on the FIFA pitch since 2015 and should be this addition’s memorable stroke.

FIFA 20 feels like it might be a more divisive entry than usual. In altering the physics and game flow so dramatically, the team risks alienating just as many players as it hopes to bring in. That said, everything that makes FIFA what it is remains intact, with the usual attempts at streamlining and bug-wrangling. VOLTA is the big draw, with its community-driven structures and inclusive character creation. While plenty of fans will no doubt immediately jump to their favorite corners of FIFA, this year’s attempt at trying something new feels almost like its own game. EA Sports has been trying more and more lately to put a little something for everyone in each title, and FIFA 20 does exactly that.

FIFA 20 is not an overhaul for the series, but combines its top tier core gameplay with some neat additions such as the fun Volta game mode.

FIFA 20 offers more of the same: lots of game modes, licenses and FUT, that will be the protagonist in the coming months, but also Volta, that surprises and can even be considered as a stand-alone game. Football fans have two great games to enjoy this year.
