Breathedge takes an interesting premise and shoves it out the airlock with an overreliance on tired jokes and half-baked survival sim mechanics. An admirable attempt to move the genre forward collapses under the weight of too much self-awareness and not enough polish.

The humor may not be to everyone's taste, but aside from that, the beautiful views of space wrecks and the challenge of escaping death make for a few entertaining hours of gameplay. Building a space station is its own reward, as are the in-game rewards. We can only recommend the game and look forward to jumping right back into the adventure.

In a nutshell, Breathedge is a Subnautica in space. While it’s not as good as the Unknown Worlds Entertainment’s masterpiece and would benefit from a better story, it’s still a solid survival game, real pretty and spiced up with absurd humor.

The tongue-in-cheek humor doesn't always quite land the joke (I think its a translation to English), but it contrasts well against a survival scenario in the harshest of environments where death surrounds you. I often have a distaste for "hunger bars" and such boiled down game mechanics, but I find in this setting it actually add a bit of thrill. I found myself trying to make the most out of every short trip out the airlock. I haven't completed the game yet, but I'm very much enjoying it.

Ultimately, it's a game full of great ideas and some addictive gameplay mechanics, but clashes with some poor pacing and a complete shift-up in the second half that loses all the charm. For an Xbox Game Pass title, there's undoubtedly some fun to be had in the survival space sim if you can look past its flaws. Just don't go in expecting the Lost in Space experience the game tries to sell.

Breathedge is a game at odds with itself. It tries to tell a compelling story, but the core narrator drones wearisome and unfunny dialogue; the world is beautiful and begging to be explored, but only ever an inch at a time; environments are curated with dark humour, but the gameplay loop doesn't allow time to take it in; and, worst of all, it undercuts players that commit hours to these systems by replacing them with a grim excuse for a walking simulator. For a title set in the vast expanse of space where anything is possible, it just isn't worth the time.

Despite some performance problems, it is a great survival with history. His own style and cliché satire is very good, and has a lot of extras to collect. Recommended for those looking for a more calm and frightless survival.

The game features some very well implemented gameplay mechanics, as wellas a huge variety of elements, but its experience also finds itselfharmed by a rather repetitive and monotonous action, long loading times,and a change near its end that makes the game too linear.

It shows itself to be so willing to skewer a genre that’s ripe for it, but then it falls into the same traps and pitfalls that you’d expect in any other survival game. If you’re a fan of the genre anyway, that may not matter, and you may appreciate a bit of humour added on to the usual, but if you’re hoping that Breathedge might be a breath of fresh air, look elsewhere.

That’s not to say Breathedge doesn’t have its moments. It can be genuinely funny when it lets itself, and once you reach the point where the survival aspects start to open up and oxygen management becomes less of a pain, it even starts to get a little fun. But the journey to that point is too long and too laborious, and as soon as Breathedge finds its groove, it cuts away to a particularly unsatisfying end.

While there’s some comfort in the repetitive routine of mining and seeking refuge back in your space liner, as you gradually chip away at your objectives, its endless gags and space jokes do get tedious very quickly.

Breathedge doesn’t quite hit that Galaxy Quest level of parody that is on par with its subject, but it is still reasonably entertaining. Unfortunately the gameplay itself suffers from a few serious pacing and mechanical issues, but the story may be funny enough to push you through. Ultimately Breathedge is, at best, a mediocre survival game with a pretty good story. While I wouldn’t suggest this as your first survival game, if you’re a fan of the genre, specifically Subnautica, you’ll likely find some things to enjoy here.

Breathedge is far from your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill survival games for a magnitude of hysterical reasons that are worth discovering for yourself. Although the game starts a little slow, the constant slapstick dad jokes break up the mundane repetition that players normally encounter when starting a new survival game. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys easter egg styled dad jokes or wants something oddly rewarding to play at a casual pace.

If you're addicted to survival games like myself, this may be something you'll want to play to try out yourself. But if you're wanting to enter the genre, this isn't your entry point. There's plenty of better options out there, and Breathedge simply ends up existing when it could have been shining.

There's a beginning scene where a robot smokes and it asks whether this is offensive to you and if you want the game censored so you don't get triggered. I love it. The game isn't easy. It gets better as you get more stuff though. The only criticism is that it's from a first time studio, which isn't a criticism fully but you can tell the chapters aren't exactly even. It's like they ran out of time and did the third chapter as way more linear, unless that's a design decision. It's like chapter 1 is huge and ad it goes on you can tell eventually someone was like we gotta finish this thing and so they did.10/10 for a first game from a new developer. Hopefully some latches balance out the chapters better, but for friggin $25 it's a deal. It's a really well built game for such a price and if more developers priced their games correctly like they did here the entire industry would be ten times better.Good job guys. Building out a space station is its own reward, as are the in-game rewards. Enjoy yourself out there in the vast nothingness with your immortal chicken, wits, and maybe a wrench or two.

It’s not very helpful at the start, and at times the comedy falls flat. But stick with Breathedge and there’s a surprisingly deep mechanic entwined with a Schafer-esque story adventure.

Breathedge has a lot going for it in its well-loved Early Access sandbox portion. But when it becomes more of a walking simulator, things take a turn. Regardless, it's a funny game that's still worth playing for anyone who enjoys the concept and the humor. But I can't help but think that many will be disappointed by the later parts of the game.
