There's a lot about this game that's genuinely amazing.But it's all dragged down by the game's awful, AWFUL connectivity issues. I can count on one hand the number of times I've played a game online and actually had it finish without the game breaking partway through. And by breaking, I mean that the turn timer just straight-up fails to work, and no one can make any progress whatsoever. I've literally just sat on the same player's turn for a full half hour without anything happening before finally giving up. I'd estimate about 70% of my games ended this way. The idea of seamlessly replacing a disconnected player with an AI seems like a foreign concept to the developers. And unfortunately, it's not just my connection - every single Armello player I've ever encountered on Xbox has encountered the same issue. Even getting a game to start is nightmarish - I've actually had multiple instances of the game just refusing to start despite all 4 players being present and ready. All of this is exacerbated by the total lack of local multiplayer - while this makes some sense due to certain game mechanics (hidden information, players being allowed to act when it's not their turn), it doesn't exactly help when your only other options are playing with predictable AI or attempting to play online only to run into a brick wall.Also there's a ton of DLC to the point where more than half the playable characters (and counting) have to be bought separately from the base game.I genuinely loved the games I was able to play to completion, and I desperately want to recommend this and give it a 9, but I can't in good conscience pretend these issues aren't there and don't drag down the game to the point of being nigh-unplayable.

Armello is very much in the tone of Redwall, using anthropomorphic animals to tell the story of a crown up for grabs. See the king, a lion, is quite mad and has been infected by the usurper force of the game - the Rot.You have a limited amount of time before the king dies, each night he gains 1 Rot, and each morning he loses 1 health. If he runs out of health, then the hero with the highest prestige wins the game.The race is on between bear, wolf, rabbit and rat clans to deal with this problem once and for all.Victory comes if you either kill the king, wait out his worsening health or use 4 spirit stones to heal him.Once you've chosen your hero, all with various strengths and weaknesses, you pick a ring and an amulet from the ones you have unlocked.Now the game begins in earnest and you're vying for power with the other 3 heroes, either other players online, or the AI if you're playing a single player game. The AI in Armello is also pretty good, and it's capable of pulling some pretty human-like surprising moves against you/and each other.Armello is a gorgeously made turn based game, the quality of the presentation and the atmosphere, aesthetics, and art style are excellent. Each turn plays out in a bright, colourful manner, or a great looking board with superb animations and brilliantly designed characters. It oozes quality from the get-go and it's hard to pick just one element to talk about, it's all good stuff.

The characters are animal based and have different abilities for each, and are well done. It has multiplayer, local is nice, online can be hard to find games with a limited player base. There are four win conditions for each game, so it's much like playing a board game. Music and art are very nice, my only real complaints is that there is no campaign and the map is the same for every game without any variation outside a seasonal change. I enjoy it, but a campaign and map variation would have pushed this to an 8/9 for me.

Armello is a great board game. You can put an amazing amount of hours into this game seeing there are varying ways you can win a match. However, on a certain moment the board will be full of enemies and what it takes to kill them is a bit annoying sometimes.

Even with these small complaints, I feel Armello is an amazing game. I have already found several hours of enjoyment as it really has no end. Every time I played it was a new game with a new outcome. Even as I write this review I am excited about jumping in and playing a few more rounds before bed. Armello truly captured the fun of the table-top genre and offered a worthwhile package on Xbox One.

It has probably been a decade or more since I played a real board game. It's just not a medium that appeals to me. However, the unique brand of magic that League of Geeks has distilled in Armello is intoxicating, and the Xbox One version has lost very little in the transition. What a wonderful and fun experience.

Armello is an excellent digital board game for anyone who struggles to get friends around the table for paper board games. It's a real shame that there is no local multiplayer mode included, but the single player is very satisfactory, and the online multiplayer excellent, assuming the standard of players remains as high as it was at the time of writing this review.

A great game. It falls short of excellence by a whisper, but as the developers have put out four major updates for free on Steam over the past year, I have high hopes for the future. It’s a labour of love, for sure, and one which I’m confident will continue to be updated in the future.

As far as i played, most of board game are based on throwing dice, and it's mostly how you play them.For a game, it looks great, it sounds great, gameplay is nice. Unfortunetly there is no story.

Armello is as close as we can get to a board game experience, and a great one at that. Its rules are quite deep and very well thought, providing a well-balanced mixture of luck and skill.

I think it's amazing and worth playing. However, the lack of an in-game chat system makes this board game feel very isolating and lonely. If you wanna have fun here, bring friends and bring Skype.

I see that it seems to be very well done. I just do not care for the actual "game". Its like getting a near perfect PC version of Monopoly where you can safely say "yes - that is how it should look and feel like on PC!" - but simply not liking Monopoly.A game session is nice and short (however - too long for just a very quick casual burst) - the AI ... well.... does not seem to play impartial but tends to team up against the player (at least in solo player mode)It does sometimes feel like the AI either has a ton of luck on rolls and encounters - or simply cheats a little.In terms of design - i would have liked a much much longer experience to get to know the hero one is playing - as well as the other players heroes. I admire what League of Geeks has attempted because I’m their target audience. But it’s deeply frustrating to peer down through this smear of bad decisions at a design I really want to play. This should be a great fifteen-minute adventure. It has the necessary components: smart interlocking gameplay systems, snappy pacing, adorable artwork and animation, a truly imaginative setting. But it’s not a fifteen minute adventure. It’s an hour-long interface nightmare. Armello, which would be a great boardgame, is a terrible videogame.

With so much to offer and such a great presentation, it’s hard for me not to consider Armello a must-buy for anyone with even a passing interest in digital board games or innovative RPGs. Deep gameplay and a wide variety of characters, victory conditions, and more, there’s a ton to dive into that’s all wrapped in a gorgeous package.

Then I picked up a lucky card that grants you 1 prestige per turn for 3 turns...and 4 turns later I won the game.It's a shame, because there's so much to like. The idea is unique (to me, anyway) playing different characters is fun, the sound is great, the game is enjoyable to look at.But the thing about strategy games is...they have to be about using your mind to win, and this isn't. There's no doubt strategising helps *a little*, but it's overwhelmed by luck.If they could make the game less dependent on luck, I'd be willing to give it 9 or 9.5 (The game area itself is very small too in terms of hexes and quickly feels cramped, you see everything in a few turns.)I found this game very fun to play at first, but quickly lost interest. They need a bigger game board, a longer game and more things on the board (currently bare terrain, a settlement, or a stone ring....not much variety.)If they can make a few changes, they'd have a real winner on their hands. As it is, it just isn't a strategy game. Giving it and eight anyway because it's fun for a while.

If you enjoyed playing board games or card games when you were younger (or are still young), Armello will captivate you. The game is beautiful to look at, fun to play, and challenging enough to keep you coming back for more. Even if you’ve never played a game like this before, it’s enjoyable just learning to play and finally getting a satisfying victory.
