The game has tons of items to unlock and an overall good amount of stuff to do, but all of this really falls flat when the gameplay gets so repetitive. No matter what mode you play, there isn’t much gameplay variety outside of the standard gameplay mechanics. You don’t have the options that you get in the usual WWE 2K yearly release and it all wears thin fast and becomes a chore to play. The game is honestly fun at first, but it just doesn’t hold up well in the long run. I honestly prefer WWE 2K20 over Battlegrounds and that’s saying a lot with all the problems that game had.

There are no entrances, unique movesets or fun diverse characters to try. The first problem is all the characters have the same moves. The second is that all the characters are behind a paywall. Thankfully the first problem means you will have no desire to waste money on the unlocks. Bad graphics, bad gameplay and bareley even a wrestling gameThey should be ashamed.

It's cartoonish and that's fine but there are a few hiccups as there are glitches with announcing (too generic) and at times graphics. But my biggest gripe is the microtransactions to get more wrestlers. I don't mind unlocking a few but if you want to play as Drew McIntyre or Becky Lynch you can't unless you rack up points or pay extra. The game will perpetually get compared to WWE All Stars and I think it’s fair. I have to admit that through my rose colored glasses, I remember All Stars as the better overall title at launch, but the lack of roster depth (including no women) and the fact that it died off because its parent studio did really hurt its potential. The fact that Battlegrounds still that potential to be discovered and 2K can do so much more with it makes this an interesting title to watch, and one I’d recommend giving a shot if it intrigues you enough.

With WWE 2K Battlegrounds, 2K has made it impossible to recommend for price and value. All aspects of the game revolve around microtransactions and by offering so little to begin with, the motivation to continue playing isn't present. Even the little things that make WWE games worth playing, such as seeing your favourite star enter the arena, are ruined with short audio clips and the same punch out of casket or box entrance. With baffling modes and gameplay that doesn't ever need to extend past single button bashing, it really highlights how 2K have gone for the cash grab and decided a mobile game may reach a wider audience on consoles. This is one title that needs to Rest….In……Peace.

Since standard WWE 2K21 is not coming out, we got Battleground, a more arcade-yapproach to the WWE universe. Sadly Battlegrounds has basically the same problemsas previous iterations. Microtransactions, bugs, dull gameplay throw shadow on agood try to refresh the franchise.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the WWE’s big release for the year, but it’s taken a new direction after last years effort and is a decent arcade alternative to the previous WWE games. The gameplay is fair and different, but you always expect a decent storyline to play through as well. The comic strip idea is OK but with no voice acting anywhere it just feels a bit weak.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds on Xbox One brings a fast-paced arcade wrestling game to the market, which features a greatly diverse roster, a decent variety of modes and moves that pack a punch. Sadly, the bulk of the gameplay takes a while to get to grips with and even then, it becomes monotonous after a short length of time. The limited access to the roster doesn’t help in that sense, nor does the utterly bland narrative.

As it stands, the implementation of grind and paid currency wring all the fun out of the experience, leaving a game with some potential that isn't worth the effort to see all the way through. Much like a modern-day RAW main event, the in-ring action is sound if not memorable, but it's the decisions behind the scenes that really ruin it for everyone.

I don’t hate WWE Battlegrounds. It’s a much more arcadey style of game that I think is a better representation of what a pro wrestling game should be. But it does have its own set of problems in its lack of depth and aggressive microtransactions. Create a Wrestler is very shallow itself. Not being able to generally create actual wrestlers to fit inside this arcade world is a shamble. Let alone having to purchase more slots to potentially create more wrestlers is disgraceful. Wanna upload your creation to the world? Sorry... You can't as its not an option.3. The repetitive game nature makes longevity of playing the game obsolete once you have spent countless hours playing Battleground Mode and Story Mode. The rinse and repeat nature is fun for an hour every blue moon, but soon enough you will tire because of its elementary level gameplay mechanics and lack of any depth. The Campaign and Battleground Challenge are each presented in bite-sized chunks. The various matches never tend to go over five minutes. Everything is quick and breezy, with systems that put everyone on equal footing. It’s not incredibly deep, the characters don’t always look great, and all the stuff with price-tags on it can be daunting, but it’s surprisingly entertaining. Especially if you’re jumping in for quick bursts and want a goofy wrestling game anyone can enjoy.

Gameplay in WWE 2K Battlegrounds is basic but that keeps the controls from hindering the more arcade style thats set out to ensure you have fun. There is little depth to the wrestler’s move sets and although different classes of wrestlers have different moves, a lot of these are actually shared even between the more iconic wrestlers on the roster. Despite the minimalist gameplay mechanics, the game still maintains fun to play and the wrestlers even have special moves.There are different game modes with the highlight of them being the King of the Battleground which is a mash up of a Battle Royale where the last wrestler standing wins. You can grind to unlock wrestlers by grinding or if you just want to play as your favorite wrestlers from the moment you buy the game, then you can opt to purchase them for immediate access. WWE 2K Battlegrounds is definitely one of the best WWE 2K games over its many years, so if you’re a fan this is an absolute must buy, if not a huge wrestling fan but do enjoy it on occasion be sure to pick it up on sale. Even the achievement hunters will rejoice in the easily obtained gamer score in this years release for your Xbox One console.

This is a pure fun game that isn't meant to be taken seriously, don't know if it is worth £45 but since we will be getting free updates with new content i don't feel ripped off by the price, the microtransactions don't feel intrusive as you can just play campaign to unlock everything. More variety in the grapples wouldn't be to bad either.
