The Long Dark is a survival game that does a very good job at conveyingan experience mired in solitude and bitter loneliness, all while keepinga pleasant-looking art style. Even though the visual quality was a bitcompromised when the game was ported over to the Nintendo Switch, fansof survival games will find many resources to work with, a healthyvariety of game modes, and a plot that's truly immersing.
The Long Dark is a title that successfully uses the classic plot device of man vs. nature. With so much detail put into the gameplay, it can be easy to feel as cold as your player in this freezing Canadian wilderness. The endlessly entertaining survival mode lets you explore Great Bear Island to your heart’s desire.
There is a very good game in the center of an overall experience that ends up less than the sum of its parts at first glance, but one that if you are willing to put in the struggle and slog through to the other side can reward you with one of the better survival simulations there is.
In the end, The Long Dark won me over through the same war of attrition it demanded of me during playing. What starts as an oppressive wilderness and battle of the elements eventually unfolds into a gratifying progression as I learned how to survive efficiently through trial and error. They say that adversity builds character, and if you can grow some thicker skin, there’s a lot of character in The Long Dark to discover.

If you are looking for a realistic survival game Hinterland studios has delivered exactly that. Bear in mind that this game does have a steep learning curve, it should not dissuade you from watching game-play footage on YouTube. This is not the genre of game you can expect to mindlessly shoot zombies. If that is the type of game play you are looking for, you can stop reading now.Yes, the switch is an under powered console to run this game, however it only seems to have an effect when transitioning areas or sustaining injuries; rendering load times a bit on the lengthy side (20-25 seconds). On the Nintendo switch it tends to be difficult to play while sitting in a brightly lit area, an issue that is not typically experienced on other platforms. Since it's initial release Hinterland studios has consistently released periodic updates which expand on the plot driven single player campaign and adds new mechanics and items to survival mode. As other reviews may have mentioned it can be quite difficult at times on higher difficulties, you can expect to die multiple times while learning the basics. There are four factors that are essential to the survival of your character, warmth, fatigue, thirst, and hunger; all of these mechanics go hand in hand and affect game play based on their values. Game play in any mode has a rifle, revolver and a bow. As you progress your primary skills and secondary skills increase and boost your overall effectiveness. All game zones are static and do not change, while items in survival mode have a random spawn location which further increases difficulty. If harder game settings are not your cup of tea, there is an option to fully customize a survival game which allows you to increase or decrease the spawn rate of all wildlife, resources, and items. There have been a great many games that manage to have a fantastic ambiance, all of which seem to gray in comparison to The long dark's ability to instill a sense of dread when down to your last rifle round, stuck in a secluded shack you are seeking shelter in to escape being hunted, slowly freezing as you hear the wind outside battering the exterior walls. This can be a very difficult game, however it is immensely rewarding once you familiarize yourself with the mechanics.
Ultimately, we can easily recommend The Long Dark on Nintendo Switch. It’s one of few survival games like it on Switch, and the port is solid, barring a few visual issues caused by a drop in resolution.

The devs gave up on the story updates, and I'm going to be honest, walking to A to B when you don't know the map it's pretty impossible. But when you know the map the mystery goes away and this turns into a walking simulator, and the maps look pretty small after that. It's pretty hard, but also boring at (most) times. As a survival game it's fine, but other games did it way better and are more realistic. This game needs more animals, more real situations, more everything. I would only buy this when the story mode it's over, and it will not be anytime soon, or ever.
Минусы:1. Сюжет. Такой не интересный, что ПЕРВАЯ катсцена в God Of War I вызывала гораздо больше интереса, чем ко всей сюжетной линии ( которая недоделана ) The Long Dark.

The Long Dark is an amazing spectacle of narrative brilliance and survival. The twists and unexpected turns of the story are complemented by the survival mechanics that are challenging and thought provoking. The Survival Mode gives players a sandbox to play in, and allows them to play and survive how they see fit. With the story being released in episodic expansions, there's always a reason to come back and play.

For challenge hounds, there are some things to keep you coming back and even for the casual it’s good enough to have you checking for updates. Definitely something that will stay on file for future rainy days.Gather, hunt, explore and above all else, survive in a comic style world with a serene setting and enough thrown at you to keep it feeling intense and paced enough to keep you going. The story mode drives you through the game while the survival mode is just that. Choose your pace, yet choose wisely as there is nothing more to do except see how long you can outlast the elements, animals and time.A well put together game, polished just enough.

After playing for few hours, and writing a review I had to educate myself to learn, that this has been around for a while, with pre-production starting as far back as 2013. For me this slots in the category of good indie games, like Kona and Firewatch, and with different game modes hopefully lasts longer than a day or two.I usually find boring the aspect in survival games, that you need to feed, drink, sleep and such way too often, The Long Dark let’s you actually play.I’m from one of the nordic countries, so I especially find the cold harsh environment envigorating, those Canadian developers sure know how to incorporate sense of cold and dark in their games. Definitely recommend, just this year alone I’ve spent hundreds of euros to lesser quality AAA games, but once in a while you find an indie gem like The Long Dark.

You will count your calories, keep your backpack clean and everything will be great. the story, the locations, wonderful. Ambient, a little bit of silence, it's all there to create a unique mood. They ask you to pay for it, but it is not finished. It Randomly CRASHES and erases save files. I happens like every 1 hour, just as you get pulled in by the survival, which is great. I am very very disappointed in this game. The studio behind it promised a full survival experience, but after waiting almost 2,5 years for that promise to come true, we get this... I bought the game 2 times, first when it was in alpha sandbox mode, and now when it has come out " supposedly full game". It really made me angry, especially because, to be safe and be sure I was spending the money on the " good thing" I read a couple reviews here on metacritic beforehand. There was one critic who stated that the game crashes every now and then. But Hinterland studio responded to his review stating " that post patch repairs have been implemented, and the game should be working just fine " So, i trusted them. And what ? First day playing, me and my brothers all bought the game for ps4 to play together. U know " start at the same time , and who could survive longer" and we all CRASHED hard. I feel cheated by Hinterlands, and their politics. I'm seriously considering writing them a letter o complaint, directly to Canada. Because i believe you should not treat people like that. Let me tell you some facts about this game : They made hundreds of thousands from the kickstarter campaign, they have financial backing from the Canada media fund, and then made another heap of money selling the alpha version of the game for like 20 euro, upping the price upon release in aug. 2017 to like 35 euro. So if you cross check the number of people in the studio with the probable amount of money they made, one could get the impression that this is plain con art. I bet theres more people who feel the same way I do.
I may be overcompensating the other way a little too hard when I say that it seems like a perfect fit for anyone who likes their games to be challenging. At the same time, tough, given what I saw between very frequent deaths, I’m pretty sure it’ll be a great match for anyone who doesn’t mind dying a bunch.

I had no idea about it, but saw it in the Playstation store one morning, and decided to download it. I was hooked immediately. I spent two hours playing survival mode before I was killed by a pack of wolves. I ended up showing it to all my friends, giving them each a shot in the game. My brother loved it, and, I think he's still alive to this day in his play through. Admittedly I have not played the story yet, just been having fun in the survival mode, competing with friends to see who can outlast who.As a Canadian, I also feel quite proud playing the game. When you wade through a blizzard, freezing in the middle of the night (again game time) and you just see that maple leaf waving in the wind... its strangely inspiring. Its not very often I get to see my home in video games.Anyway, I thought the game was really thoughtfully done. The survival mode feels huge. You can find entrances and exits to other maps, so there is a profound sense of exploration. Go grab it! Its not even that expensive.
The Long Dark is a survival game, one of many some will say, but with its interesting story and a touch of mystery, we’ve got a very good game before us.
An essential survival game keeps the perfect balance between playability and realism, which drags you in and won’t let you out. The game’s cold atmosphere couldn’t ruin even a few little mistakes and a slightly weaker story.
The Long Dark is a satisfying experience of survival that is both realistic and has good game mechanics. It’s very unforgiving and can be frustrating but gets better the longer you play and learn.
With its stellar survival mechanics, The Long Dark makes for a brutal experience that requires patience and micromanaging to fully appreciate. However, it’s brought down by some bugs and a story mode that leaves much to be desired. It’s nonetheless a satisfying test of survival in a gorgeous setting – as long as you can brave the frigid cold.

Because after every third or fourth door (doesnt matter entering or leaving) lurks a blue screen. Game crashed. You now get to repeat the last two or three hours.I understand the developers got sidetracked, producing proof of concepts for a Long Dark movie. And that's a shame, because they obviously took their eyes off their game, which can be so mesmerizing at times it's unfortunate that even after Patch 12 the PS4 game it is essentially a defective product. So very disappointing, because this is a diamond in the rough, and could be wonderful. I cannot recommend.
The final version of The Long Dark comes to Xbox One and the game is all that we can expect: an intense survival experience. The experience is deep, lovely, slow and very compact. It also has a story mode, Wintermute, who is perfect to introduce the player into the survival mode, and a perfect way to start for beginners.

I had to use my mind while playing so that to me offered something that is not all that common now. The graphics were in a unique style that i had never seen before. As I previously stated, thinking was an important aspect of the game determining whether or not you died or survived. I was always wary of wildlife knowing the sound of a wolf howl could save your life(I learned this the hard way). The game is unforgiving and surviving for more than a couple of hours when starting a game is challenging no matter what difficulty you are playing on.IN THE LONG DARK you will soon know how cruel mother nature can be. You may decide to look for a new home but as soon as are just of sight of your old safe house the wind picks up snow starts falling in droves and you hear the heart piercing howl of a wolf not far from your current position. Chances are you will succumb to the cold, be mauled by the wolf or manage to stumble back to your base and die of hypothermia as you attempt to light a fire. YOU HAVE FADED INTO THE LONG DARK is a phrase you will see or hear often. No matter your skill level i have often thought i was safe only to find how neck deep in peril i actually was. Here is a recount of one of my personal experiences. I am stocked up on food and supplies in a barn and i am ready to find a more long term sustainable home. I have no way to hunt but i have a hunting to harvest already dead carcasses. So i set out into the wild ready for anything, or so i thought. While I was so excited about long term survival I began to forget about short about short term survival. The wind was picking up and snow was falling more heavily and steadily. If I was paying more attention i would have noticed I was on the cusp of a blizzard yet I didn't so i played the price in blood. My breathing became more rasp and hoarse and i learned i now had hypothermia. I began to run in the direction of the barn i had set out from throwing all caution to the wind which was now giving me windchill. I almost decided to just give myself over to the elements but low and behold I caught sight of the barn only a hundred feet away. My heart now set on survival i began to shamble towards the barn safety within reach, when i heard the howl. I was now face to face with a wolf caught in a life or death struggle. I heaved the wolf off my and burst inside the barn which consisted of waiting at a loading screen. I was safe or so i thought my arm had been ripped open by the wolf and there was now a risk of infection. Later that day i went to bed with a fire roaring my arm bandaged and antibiotics swallowed.I woke in the middle of the night to find severe infection had set in and i had a very bad case of hypothermia. My vision was blurred and I knew without a shadow of a doubt I would soon be rapping on death's door. I was facing the end so I decided I would face death weapon in hand. I open the door to the outside stepped out and faced the wolf. While this game is fun it is more of a required video game taste. There are problems with THE LONG DARK but if you interested in survival i will recommend give this game a try.
The art and the well-thought-through presentation make The Long Dark an excellent survival genre. The cold, the hunger and the danger of the Canadian countryside leave a big impression. It is too bad the story is not as well made.
I would highly recommend giving The Long Dark a go, especially if you’re after something different and love the idea of a survival sim with an interesting story.
Using time as an enemy in such an ingenious fashion only makes the game more fun and the challenge more dangerous, and I can’t get enough of it.
It's important to remember that The Long Dark is just waking up from early access. It's cold, hungry, and huddled somewhere under a rock face, but it's just gotten the fire started. Another three story episodes are still due, so there is time to turn things around for Will and Astrid. However, because the best parts of The Long Dark are already alive and well in survival mode, perhaps Wintermute's weak beginning is reason enough to stick to what's worked for the game all along, blemishes and all.
With its stellar survival mechanics, The Long Dark makes for a brutal experience that requires patience and micromanaging to fully appreciate. However, it’s brought down by some bugs and a story mode that leaves much to be desired. I’ve been passionate about the development of The Long Dark since its announcement in 2013, and when it works, it’s at the absolute top of the hardcore survival genre. The world is expansive and detailed, demanding to be explored. Mastering the systems provides concrete rewards, truly giving players the sense that they’re learning to survive, and becoming more successful because of it. It’s too bad that the game is so unstable at the moment — when it’s actually finished, The Long Dark will probably be an incredible survival experience. Right now on the PS4? It’s too buggy and hostile to recommend.
The first two episodes of The Long Dark's story mode are a great way to start off the official launch of the game. Great survival experience, tons of things to do and, hopefully, the best is yet to come.
If it sounds as if I’m overly frustrated with The Long Dark, it’s because I am. The sheer number of times that it hints at being a special game that entirely dominates every single survival-based title that has come before it is staggering. But for every one of those times, there’s another time where it’s broken, bugged, or just plain poorly thought-out.
The Long Dark is a strong survival title, possibly even the strongest of the entire genre. A beautiful but dangerous Canadian wilderness provides the backdrop to a challenging but largely satisfying fight for survival. While micromanaging every facet of your well-being while trying to survive might sound tedious in description, it actually ends up being fun, satisfying, and even tense. With three more episodes to come for this title's story mode, there's already tons of content to chow down on. Just watch out for the wolves.
The Long Dark‘s long-in-the-making story mode was worth the wait. And with an eventual total of five episodes each looking to last between seven and ten hours, it looks like it may well prove a truly epic survival experience.
Highly immersive and stylistically slick, The Long Dark is equal parts rewarding, terrifyingly lonely, and challenging. At the onset ofHighly immersive and stylistically slick, The Long Dark is equal parts rewarding, terrifyingly lonely, and challenging. At the onset of entering one of multiple areas of its large frozen sandbox world, you will be pressed to scavenge in order to secure food, water, and warmth to make it through the long cold nights. With some luck and common sense, you'll begin to store up the supplies and tools you need to keep alive, and with some thoughtful planing, you can begin collecting and assembling items to make your task easier and more sustainable. You'll learn that living off the land is key. From my exp with the game, resources like wood (used for fire and tools) will not "regen" and reappear in the open world once found and used, which makes things realistic but will force you to keep moving, exploring, and not getting too settled in one place for too long. Once you have run out of wood for a fire source within reach of where you are, for example, you can be left with no choice but to move on to find another source of shelter and resources. Depending on your play style, you will love or hate this aspect of the game. All in all, I have survived around three weeks with my current play through, and while there is a learning curve that might keep some players away, once you get into the groove of the game it is quite a rush, in the lonely harsh open world kind of way, where each day you live feels like a mini victory in and of itself.Although the game is not narrative heavy, there is certainly a story unfolding in a subtle way, waiting to be discovered as you explore. No fancy cutscenes or voice acting...just clues to something bad that has happened leaving countless dead and an unforgiving world for you to survive in. Overall, enjoying my time and vibe of the game!

Survival games have been all about zombies or similar creatures, never the pure realistic struggle against nature. That's where The Long Dark comes in. It's not a friendly game despite it's soft art style, you will starve to death, freeze to death or die to exhaustion (not to mention wolves). It uses this kind of cell shading graphics yet it impresses for how much it feels real. The sense of clinging to life is always present when you constantly find new places, train tracks, trailers, a dam, makes you hold on to hope, for a better day tomorrow. It may sound easy, but believe me - it's not. There are a lot of different ways of dying and you never know what will kill you this time, so the game itself makes you feel nervous...
