Shredder’s Revenge is a triumphant return for the Ninja Turtles. For all the reinventions and expansions of this classic property, there’s nothing quite like the original. Seeing the spirit of both the cartoon and Konami’s classic games so faithfully reproduced here was wondrous to behold. At the same time, Tribute Games has also managed to one up the games that came before it with a sharper combat system that allows for all sorts of creative ways to take down foes. Boss fights lack some of the nuance to defeat that rank and file grunts provide, but the spectacle of these battles makes up for that. Shredder’s Revenge is available via the eShop, but there are a number of ways to get hold of the game physically, as well. No matter how you play it, the heroes in a half shell are worthy of your time.

This new TMNT game stands out for being an artistic explosion with detailed pixel art and a good amount of nods for the most nostalgic. Its gameplay feels very smooth both on local and online multiplayer.

Characters do not appear and neither the health bars. Only way to fix is exiting the game.- The Taunt + Special power "unlimited exploit" broke the offline game. It makes the game awfully easy and also really, really annoying online because players taunt everytime hindering the game, annoying due to sound effects and ending the "beat´em up" part - it's just a special move spamming session online. Make it limited or whatever possible to fix this.- Please give us a way to remove idle players. They "hold" the screen and the game gets unplayable. Disconnect them after a while idle, give us a move where we can toss them, I dont know. When it's not the bugs ruining the game, it's the idle players.- The pizza on the 5th stage needs a shadow or an indicator, it's impossible to know where it is. Or make it fly WITH the screen so we can get it.- A minor thing: Please make the "hot to play" screen disabling possible on options. Yes it's skippable, but it's annoying.The game is good, but broken right now. Please work on it.

The soundtrack is catchy as hell and the art style is a perfect mix of the old 80's cartoon and retro beat'em up style games. Unfortunately, this is also a fairly easy game to beat and the side quests don't offer enough content to warrant a second playthrough. But this is still a really fun game and if you can get another seven players together, you won't regret it.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge not only recreates the joy of encountering a Ninja Turtles classic arcade game from back in the day but perfectly mixes in modern-day conveniences like advanced combo controls, a multitude of moves, and characters that genuinely feel like they play differently for a more varied experience. I’m not usually a fan of Beat ‘em up game, and this game certainly isn’t on my favorite games of all time list, but I do have found memoriesI’m not usually a fan of Beat ‘em up game, and this game certainly isn’t on my favorite games of all time list, but I do have found memories of playing a TMNT beat ‘em arcade cabinet with my brother in a Ronald McDonald’s house while my brother was in the hospital in the early 2000s. And that’s definitely enough to trigger the nostalgia. I’m not a huge TMNT fan so a lot of the minor characters and villains I don’t know and the game barely does anything to teach me about them. But they are very fun to just beat up on. The online works great, and is very forgiving if you disconnect. You can join matches mid match, if you disconnect from a room it seamlessly puts you into your own room without kicking you out of the level. I believe the switch is the only version with six player couch co-op and it’s amazing. Very good game.

Between collectables, challenges, leaderboards, achievements, leveling your characters for unlocks and the sheer madness of up to 6 players on screen at once, this is an absolute blast full of replayability- and if you hear differently, well they are just wrong. The only knock I'd give it is that there should be universal crossplay available. Perhaps this will change, but for now the only crossplay that exists at launch is between Xbox and PC. Switch and PS players will only be able to play MP with friends or randoms on the same platform as them. Definitely not a deal breaker. It looks delicious, sounds superb, and rekindles childhood memories beyond all expectation, time-warping you back to 1987. Its combat system is so much fun to mine that you feel compelled to keep coming back to try new strategies, and with its awesome multiplayer the experience evolves again and again. Like any beat 'em up, it does get repetitive as you enter the last third, but that’s more a fault of the concept than the game. Our only regret is that we didn’t use anywhere near enough puns in this review, so let’s close by saying Shredder’s Revenge is an unprecedented shell-ebration.

Interactions with supporting characters like Vern and Irma are deliberately handled in a manner that would fit in during the 16-bit era. Shredder’s Revenge does rely on nostalgia for the golden age of arcade gaming for players to be completely enamored with it. Without the nostalgia goggles, it’s still a great retro beat ’em up based on its own gameplay merits, but for those who grew up with the classic Turtles, it feels like a fragment of childhood has been recreated.

A love letter to the beat'em up (understand action game against several opponents) of the 16-bit generation (Super Nintendo, Mega Drive...), it pays homage to Turtles in Time by relying on a gameplay of exception and a simply masterful achievement. Fans will be thrilled.
