Classic Sonic shouldn’t even be here, he’s only here for nostalgia, which is pointless since Mania came out only 3 months before. The controls are awful, since acceleration isn’t smooth, jumps are too heavy, and the only challenge from the game is trying platform. Worst of all, this game is really short. There are 30 levels that are usually 1-2 minutes long, and the game is only about 3-4 hours long. This game is inconsistent, and it wasn’t even made by “The team that brought you Colors and Generations” which Sega said in the first trailer. Just buy Sonic Mania, it’s half the price, and better in every way.

Sonic Forces’ few merits (like the soundtrack) are not enough to offset primitive gameplay, crude level design, poor pacing that completely obliterates the sense of speed, and the script that resembles a fanfic.

I won’t pretend that Sonic Forces is a disappointment – it telegraphed its kitchen sink approach to content a long time ago. Desperately trying to please every kind of Sonic fan, it is every bit the mishmash of half realised ideas vying for your attention that it seemed like it would be. Sonic Forces improves on the 3D gameplay but ruins Classic Sonic. This game will be met with torches and pitchforks by the fans, but their kids will have fun with the custom created character and the rest of the game.

For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed and looked forward to going back to a Sonic game and will continue to hunt those red star rings for a while yet. But the main USP of the avatars let the side down. I really hope Sonic Team continue with the duel Sonic crossover games as they seem to be providing them with their best output in years.

The tone is completely scatter shot, jumping from flat jokes to mundane chatter and then sometimes even surprisingly dark developments, often all within the same cinematic. The whole Resistance/Knuckle's Army angle feels contrived and by-the-numbers and the introduction of yet another generically named villain is superfluous, even though the character himself isn't that bad.I had some fun with Sonic Forces, and it is by no means a low point for fans of the troubled series, but there is just really no reason to play it when we already got Sonic Mania, a far superior game, earlier this year.

The level design for both the modern Sonic and avatar stages is quite good, and the controls are probably the tightest they have ever been in a 3D Sonic game. The story might be a little dark at times, but for the majority of the game, it works well. And for once in a Sonic game, the bosses are actually a highlight. I loved every single boss fight there was to play through. But despite all of these great things, the game still had problems. For one, the worlds feel very uninspired when you compare them to the awesome worlds of games like Sonic Colors. And it feels like there's a lot of lost potential in the game. I won't spoil anything, but near the end of the game there is this one stage that introduces the prospect of this really cool idea (people who played the game will most likely know what I'm talking about). But about ten seconds into this stage, they instantly ditch the idea and throw you back out into the normal gameplay. That was super disappointing. But the biggest disappointment of all was classic Sonic. The gameplay for classic Sonic was superb in Generations, and Sonic Mania was an excellent way to revive that form of gameplay in it's own title. But Forces provides the most sluggish 2D Sonic stages I have ever played. The stages often feel pointless, and mostly like an afterthought. These stages honestly range anywhere from mediocre to the worst stages in the game. It's not even like classic Sonic has that big of an effect on the game. Sonic Team could have left him out and solely focused on modern Sonic and the avatar, and I think the game would have turned out much better. But despite these flaws, there is still an enjoyable game in here. If you are a Sonic fan, then this is definitely worth your time. If you're not a fan of the series, you still might find some enjoyment in here.

The game is very good overall, music, art, graphics, gameplay, amount of phases, history and its most serious mood among several other things.The game is very good overall, music, art, graphics, gameplay, amount of phases, history and its most serious mood among several other things.One of the few things I did not like was the level design of the phases with Modern and Avatar, I thought there were moments of platforms in the 3D parts, they just left plataforming in the 2D parts.And 3D parts were left with the running and kill enemies in sequence, lacked a balance, this happened to Sonic Colors also and did not like there.Otherwise the game is very good, they are on the right track, if they improve some things like the one I mentioned, the future games will get better and better.

Sonic Forces may not be the worst Sonic game ever made, but it’s close, and I don’t think the speedy blue hedgehog has many more chances to impress before gamers like myself lose all hope of him returning to his former glory.

We get the impression that Sonic Team wanted Forces to be the Best Sonic Game Ever, with a Greatest Hits package of everything good in the series, but they didn’t have the time, money or talent to accomplish this. The 2D sections control poorly, and the 3D sections sport the same problems that the series has had since Sonic Adventure – such as dying if you don’t play the level exactly as the designer intended. There’s fun to be had, but even then Forces feels so cheap and abrupt that you’ll be finished with it entirely in 4 hours. It’s not the worst 3D Sonic game, but in trying to do everything Sonic Team didn’t really accomplish anything. Next time, stick to just Generations 2 or Colours 2. Or even better – give Sonic entirely to other developers.

In short, I LOVED the custom character.I also enjoyed the story as it's dark and keeps you interested in the game, but at the same time doesn't take itself too seriously as it is a sonic game.The Modern sonic stages were also really fun with the boost gameplay, and the boss stages were a delight to play. I don't particularly enjoy the fully 2D Classic level but they weren't bad.Final Score: 9 out of 10, A fun new exciting adventure :)

It actually managed to tread new ground and give us a story we've never truly seen in a modern Sonic Game. Gameplay wise it is very fun and bridges the three generations of Sonic games well. The classic 2D side scrolling days with Classic Sonic. The adventure formula kicked up a notch with the custom character. He/she has gadgets that you can customize to make him/her handle how you want. He/she also has a homing attack similar to Sonic with his grapple claw that handles slightly different from Sonic's homing attack just to make sure that they don't feel too samey without making them feel too different. Modern Sonic handles identical to the way he did in Sonic Colors. He has the boost, slam, homing attack, double jump, and slide kick. He doesn't have the drift which isn't a big deal considering the level design is made with this omission in mind. The soundtrack is awesome. This game has come to be my 3rd favorite Sonic game ever. I love this game and guess what? The custom character unlocks are in game unlocks as opposed to loot boxes! Big plus there.

It's mostly just exceedingly average. Levels are short enough where I never once felt like they were a chore to complete, and there's enough variation in there in terms of setpieces where you can really start to see the framework of an expansive, epic Sonic. Hopping around Eggman's base in space while navigating moving platforms gives me flashbacks to the great pair of Sonic Adventure games -- a simpler time.

Whoever this shoddily made platformer is meant to please it won’t be those that like Sonic Mania, or any of the better 3D Sonic games.

Another thing is that the custom hero and modern Sonic stages were about 60% quick time events, and the bosses were incredibly easy (except the very last boss). It wasn't Sonic Generations 2 with a different name, but I feel like it would've been better off that way. However, the story was fantastic and dark, some of the music was great, the graphics were pretty great, and the classic Sonic stages were alright. Overall, I feel like this game had potential of being one of the best Sonic games, but it ended up being just good, with the gameplay being ok. I really hope that Sega and Sonic Team doesn't take this as "we shouldn't make 3D Sonic anymore" and take it as "we need to make a better 3D Sonic game" or "we need Sonic Adventure 3!"
