They should make Nippon Marathon 2 and really polish it up. This game feels unfinished.

Though the reviews for Nippon Marathon look quite bleak, it is a game for the type of person who enjoys simple, good hearted fun. The multiplayer mode is, of course the strength of this game however, the single player stories are simply odd fun! If you are considering giving this title a go, I suggest looking up some of the better reviews of this title, such as Switchup's review. Also, I would suggest watching people actually play the game. It is an odd, plucky little light-hearted title that puts me in mind of everything fun about Japanese game shows, and it is worth consideration if this sounds like something interesting at least. The mini games are also fun with a friend or three, and I do hope the developers decide to add more content in the future.

Nippon Marathon presents itself as a party game full of content and with a comically absurd concept which are two factors worth pointing out. Unfortunately the way the gameplay is implemented makes for everything but an enjoyable experience and even the most enthusiastic players will quickly find themselves frustrated at the hands of this game, which has little else in its favour as its audiovisual environment is clearly below contemporary standards.

Playing alone, Nippon Marathon is a one-note joke, stretched too thin and without enough artifice to challenge or grip a player, but as a party game it works just about well enough to amuse those who can look past its various rough edges, have money enough to spare for frivolous purchases and enjoy a silly, wonky mess from time to time.

Nippon Marathon can certainly be described as a marmite game; you will either love it or hate it. Find a group of friends that all love it and you can easily laugh away an entire evening attempting to out run each other. But it isn’t for everyone, and it is easy to understand why. What to some will look like shoddy game design is actually a very purposeful and conscientious element of the design, but that won’t necessarily sit right with those that like nothing left to chance.

Superficially it would be extremely easy to pass on this title. Yet when this title was pitched to me as Onion Soup Interactive’s digital love letter to all things Japan, the inner-weeaboo in me found the title to be oddly charming. I would certainly cast a more critical eye if I were tasked to review this studio’s future titles, but for a first effort this one’s not too bad.

In the end having extra modes beyond the main game do nothing to help Nippon Marathon remain a fun time for more than a few hours at most. It would be impressive as a final project for a college course and is still good for a few laughs at a party, but those fleeting good times are not enough for me to recommend this game.

If this had online multiplayer, it would be a little more entertaining and exciting, but I can’t picture a time where I would load this up over the other party games I have whenever I have company over. Nippon Marathon isn’t not going to be everyone’s tastes – those eye-wateringly janky visuals (whether by design or not) and the nature of physics-driven racing are an acquired taste that most people are going to tire of, fast. Nippon Marathon is a waste of digital space. The game’s seemingly fun Takeshi’s Castle-like concept is completely undermined by its several technical issues and questionable design choices. Even with that cluster-mess to the side, the game at its core attempts to be both wacky and innovative through the character of its outlandish foundation, but only comes off as poorly developed, boring, and ultimately frustrating.

Nippon Marathon is a dispensable title and a must play at the same time. A must play... for those looking for silly and timeless fun.

Technically the game held up really well throughout and the controls remained tight and responsive with no real problems. I was a little disappointed to learn that there were no online components included in the game. The presentation side of the game is too repetitive for its own good so expect both the visuals and sound design to become average after some time with the game despite the fun that is overall present. Sometimes the races can feel a little unfair and every now and then the gameplay does make you have more frustrating than fun moments. The best word to describe Nippon Marathon is definitely unorthodox, because I’m not exaggerating when I say that this game is completely insane. In fact this insanity is without a doubt the game’s unique selling point and while it does have a few shortcomings the insanity will keep you coming back for more time and time again. You’ll be pleased to know then that in terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get to grips with and each mode has tons of variety as well. Despite this though it still would have been nice to have been able to play this game in an online capacity but unfortunately there isn’t one available to you. I did however tend to forget about the lack of online though and that’s mainly down to the game being so much fun when playing with friends, and this for me is when the game truly shines. Dont get me wrong it can also be enjoyed on your own as well but when played this way you will feel that the races are a little unfair at times and you will get frustrated more because of this. At the end of the day though Nippon Marathon does get a solid recommendation from me because there isn’t really anything quite like this on the Xbox One and this uniqueness does hide the little shortcomings the game suffers with meaning the fun factor stays high for the most part. Thumbs up party fun!
