Not designed by the brightest.

All in all and Niffelheim on Xbox One is the very definition of a game of two halves. The mining, the crafting and the constructing all work very well, and I’ve not been happier in this game than when down in the depths of my mine. Sadly, as good as this side of the game is, the combat is equally poor on the other side of the scale.

Despite its issues, Niffelheim stands as a very competent hardcore survival game that players will be engaged with for hours on end.

Niffelheim is a good game for those that enjoy the foraging and building mechanics in games. With a superb art style and intriguing story, players will find they can put a lot of hours into this game and they’re going to need it. Being a little grindy the game will find homes with many players and received good reputation on PC builds.

You are a Viking, struck down in battle, but your soul has been kept from Valhalla as you are trapped in Niffelheim, seeking your passage to Asgard. Even though you're dead you have kept your corporeal body, and must take care of it. Niffelheim is all about planning your day, and foraging for food and supplies. Chose from one of four Vikings, each with their own stats, including metabolism. Metabolism for your Viking is going to determine how much time you will need to spend hunting and gathering. Your base is built atop an ancient Mine, and you will clear the long forgotten halls to gather stone and metals, and the occasional Mushroom. Cut down the surrounding trees for wood, and Build, and upgrade your stronghold, and crafting stations. Death has already Visited you, so being stricken down is little more than an inconvenience, as you will be returned to your home, as a ghost, to go and find your physical form and reclaim it. Death does bring stat penalties that can be removed with the Regeneration Potion, and expensive to craft item. Combat in Niffelheim is heavy, and feel ungainly as you swing away, or attempt to mitigate a small amount of damage with a well timed block. Make sure to Build up your bases defenses for the oncoming undead hordes. There is no permanency to failure, you are simply set back in what you've done, and must double up on efforts to recover. The grind is unending in attempts to better your viking and find the pieces of the portal, so you can finally take your place in Asgard. Niffelheim is a great game with the grind in mind. If you enjoy an unending struggle to stay on top, then here is a great place to look! Stay vigilant warrior!
