This year's iteration of UFC from EA Sports looks good, and feels good in parts - though the submission system just doesn't appear to be as much fun to play. The best parts of this game are the boxing and kickboxing elements, and the offline career mode is a fun mode to build and forge careers in. With really no other fighting titles to purchase this year, EA Sports UFC 4 will be unrivalled for those looking for another sports-like fighting game - and while UFC 4 is not a bad game, it doesn't do much to appeal to those who don't already have a love and appreciation for the sport or the brand.

No doubt there is a lot more that could be done with a mixed martial arts game and, as a biennial release, you wonder if UFC 4 could have moved the needle a bit further on for the genre. Perhaps EA could do with a new contender to keep it on its toes, not so much undisputed as unchallenged. But for all its faults, where it matters most - in the octagon- UFC is a genuine thrill.

Because it is practically the only game in the genre, EA Sports UFC 4 is the uncontested champion. The fact that it singlehandedly fills a nice isn’t the only reason to play it, though. Once you grasp the basics, EA Sports UFC 4 is a deep game that lets you engage with it on your own terms. You can get by on easy mode, or you can rely on skills and abilities to compensate. You can simulate training if you just want to fight. If you want to develop a mastery over the game, the training menus offer a wealth of information and practice mode is very accommodating. If you want to learn about optimal builds and “hit boxes,” there are already a variety of communities online who excitedly welcome the opportunity to geek out about the game’s technical side. That’s where I’ll be going to improve my ground game. A week ago, I couldn’t imagine saying such a thing.

It’s not everything we’ve asked for, but for those who’ve played; the striking is obviously much more fluid, there’s still slight bugs with the mechanics but those are easy fixes we’ll see soon. The grappling wasn’t overhauled at all, just a new, much more predictable system they added for more casual players. I recommend switching it to the legacy controls if you’re playing online. The customization has a lot of potential, but they clearly didn’t put too much work into it, which is good because I’m hoping they plan on adding things regularly. The game overall is fair for everyone, everyone has a chance to win even when you’re using a top fighter against a lower star one. My complaint is a bug that I’ve only seen in OWC, (which is ironic) you’ll match with someone & go into the selection screen, both people will ready up & load in, & when the commentary starts you’re stuck on a purple screen, only able to see the shadows, but your opponent seems to be fine so you sit there & listen to them working you. I’ve lost 2 titles now & a division because of it, & it’s going to be a problem if it isn’t fixed soon. It’ll give the same numbers as Ultimate Team did & EA will come up with a whole new online mode when it isn’t needed because they regularly ignore the obvious bugs that people complain about daily. But if you’re a big MMA fan like me, I’d say the game is worth it, it isn’t perfect, but it’s something other than UFC 3.

You can get away with that with games like madden that have a new entry every year, but with the gaps in the ufc series, I don't think you can justify it. I think its time for Ea to hang the gloves up.

EA Sports UFC 4 shows that the quality of a sports game is far more important than the amount of quantity in it. UFC 4 improves and adds areas that needed work. It brings in new systems and tighter control designs to make the experience for more entertaining than previous years. This is the best of the best in the UFC series right now, and there is still good room to grow it.

UFC 4 is not without its flaws, most notably in its ground game and its lackluster career mode, but there are much welcomed upgrades virtually everywhere else. Meaningful character progression, a reworked striking system and an array of other improvements makes this easily the best of the series.

EA Sports has scrapped Ultimate Team from UFC 3, made a few minimal (UI) updates and put a FIFA cover on it. Please, here you have UFC 4. It's that the ten-year-old fighting system still delivers some really brutal brawls, otherwise this would be a complete joke. If you already own UFC 3, I don't see any reason to buy this part.

Definitely an evolution rather than a revolution for EA, UFC 4 continues to deliver the slick, brutal and intelligent combat that we're used to but we're still not sure about its ground game and would like to have seen a bit more of a celebration of the sport.

Ultimately, while not offering any real conceptual or structural revolution, UFC 4 proves to be a surprisingly solid product capable of offering a satisfying and above all satisfying experience regardless of one's degree of familiarity with the world of mixed martial arts.

There is no such thing as a perfect game, but there can be a perfect experience with a title because the slight issues you may experience don’t drastically hinder your enjoyment.
