The Coalition spared no resources to bring us a story DLC that’s absolutely on par with the base game in every aspect. Hivebusters offers three highly enjoyable hours and left me hungry for more.

Ultra settings, looks fantastic and runs smooth. 30 second unskippable splash intro and then about two minutes before it loads the menu. Snatchers still suck but at least it isn't like Gears 4. Xbox app and Windows Store app on PC still suck for downloading games, on 300 internet and getting capped at 7.5 download speeds, despite using all tricks and workarounds that can be found (Xbox's support on this is terrible). Has an FoV slider, goes to 100 so could use an increase but a lot better than nothing.

The DLC’s shorter length does make the juxtaposition between heated, Gears action, and deeper, more heartfelt moments, feel a bit like the flicking of a switch, but the campaign itself is a must-play for fans of Gears. It makes some interesting steps forward for the IP, introduces a fascinating new cast, while the moment to moment is as thrilling as ever.

Hivebusters is a safe but rewarding package that gives you more of what you love about Gears 5. The characters are strong, the campaign is solid, and gameplay is exactly what is expected. While the story is rather short (being justified because it's dlc) and the characters aren't the greatest, the gameplay, controls, graphics, environments, enemy's, and overall fun factor simply carry this game past it's flaws, if it were longer and the characters weren't inconsistent in thier attitudes this would be a perfect 10, overall, you have to get this dlc on series X especially if you're a fan of the gears series.

Hivebusters doesn’t have the variety or world-building of the core Gears games, and doesn't take any chances along the way, but is a fun alternative that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of. It’s nice to get to know more of the characters in this universe, one of whom flips double middle fingers in the face of danger, which may be the most Gears of War thing I’ve ever seen.
