Ever since Bram Stoker created Dracula in his 1897 Gothic horror novel, we’ve been obsessed with vampires. From the terrifying horror versions to the lovey dovey Twilight ones (eye roll), vampires continue to feature in books, films and games alike. That’s why the team at Dontnod Entertainment have created a new action RPG featuring our favourite mythical monsters.
Set in London during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, Vampyr sees you take control of Johnathon Reid, a doctor who’s recently been turned into a creature of the night. Reid has a serious inner conflict tearing him apart, as his desire to help mankind is juxtaposed to his lust for blood and subsequently his own survival. You can actually finish the game by not killing anyone – but where’s the fun in that right?!
The semi-open world of London is made up of four districts and sixty other inhabitants. Reid must gather information about his potential targets – study and change their habits, collect clues, and maintain relationships by communicating with them. He has the ability to turn people into vampires and in true vampire fashion, can only enter a house with an invitation. He has many other Nosferatu-like abilities as well as being able to wield improvised melee weapons (like a saw) and other ranged weapons (like a Webley Revolver).
Reid’s the only vampire in town too! He’ll have to fight off other breeds of vampire that include; Ekons (the aristocratic vamps), the sewer-dwelling Skals, the formidable werewolf like Vulkods, Nerods the vampire hunting vampires and the Guard of Priwen who are a secret society of Buffy the Vampire slayers! Sounds like Dr Reid’s got his work cut out for him!
