While being presented in the format of a traditional RPG, Weird West has shoot-outs that feel that they come right out of a cowboy movie, and offers quests with a ton of freedom. While the gameplay itself is simple, seeing the crazy Western setting through the lens of five different main characters is fascinating, and the mysterious story wraps up in an interesting way.

The work that has gone into the Weird West world and the characters that frequent it is impressive. Yes the grind is real, but it is a rewarding experience when it all comes together.

Lacking some refinement in general and improvements in controls, Weird West overcomes these minor problems with good stories in different characters, great immersive sim system and an addictive combat.

A western immersive sim with isometric camera mixed with supernatural elements is something that can only be experienced in video games format; and despite all the technical shortcomings caused by limited resources, Weird West is one of those very unique games that emerge once every 10 years.

And a lot of the quests feel very samy, very soon;- For a game that relies a lot on battle, I found the fighting mechanisms rather clunky and unwieldy;- Quite a lot of technical concepts are not really explained, or not clear enough. This had the most impact on the combat & on the stealth;- I encountered quite a lot of elements in the environments of which I was unsure if I was supposed to know what they were (but had missed something), or if I was not supposed to know what they were yet (and the story would explain it later on). Some dialog in the game could really have helped there ("I wonder what this thing is? I really should find out more about it!");- And I know it is an open world, so anything can happen. But if you've just started as a character, then go to your first destination, meet a group of vastly stronger enemies en route, die, and then have that happen multiple times in a row (before reaching that first destination), that is not much fun for me;So the potential is there, but the game (IMHO) needs some more polish for me.

Weird West is a truly special experience. While each one of its stories is compelling in its own right, when put together they transform into something fantastic. This is a game that shows its monsters and asks the player to be disgusted, and then turns them into a monster and asks if they feel the same way. As such, every one of the journeys contained within is worth taking, but it’s only once players have trod all of those roads that they’ll appreciate just how amazing Weird West‘s accomplishments are. It’s deep, it’s fascinating, and it’s full of the kind of storytelling that resonates for a long time after credits roll — truly an incredible experience from beginning to end.

The biggest detractor from my entertainment of the game was the glaring and obvious corner cutting in many parts of the game. If this had been made by a startup indie company or something, I'd easily have bet that they ran out of money before they completed everything they wanted to and needed to push it out the door. However, since it was Devolver that made this, they don't have the luxury of that excuse. If this game wasn't on GamePass, it would get a 5 from me, but seeing as it is, it is unique enough to warrant experiencing it since it's "free" to anyone who has GamePass. I'd like to see another game done in this genre and style, but built with deeper systems and mechanics and have more polish.

It’s buggy, the balance is off, and a good 80% of the locations only really serve as random sidequest destinations. But the storytelling drew me in, the stealth worked rather well, and on the occasions when I felt like I had resources to burn it was just so dang satisfying to slow motion dive out from behind a corner while blasting a barrage of shotgun shells.

This game should probably be a max of 20-30 dollars.I am a completionist and almost always finish games I start, but I will be struggling to find the willpower to complete this one.

The beautiful thing about Weird West is also what makes it critically impenetrable. At least for me, my enjoyment of the game is tied to my particular playstyle. If you’re more ruthless with NPCs, if you’re more stealth-focused, or if you’re more patient, this is a very different game. So my frustration with the stealth is a sign to sneak around less. If I’m unhappy with the story, I can always change how it ends. Conversely, the movement and aiming controls are a tangible way of making your platforming choice. If you’re looking for a western RPG with this sort of blissful, overwhelming freedom, you’ve come to the right place. For better or for worse, Weird West has that freedom.

Weird West has a lot of interesting systems working under the hood to let you play as you like. With this comes a certain amount of jank which undermines the immersion somewhat but the multiple character stories and many choices still make it worth playing.

Weird West sets its sights high by promising player freedom and a responsive world to butterfly effect the hell out of, and it very nearly delivers on all of it. At its best, WolfEye Studios' first outing offers delightfully chaotic combat and an interesting supernatural setting that leaves no actions without consequence. But while in many respects Weird West achieves some of its grander ambitions, it fails to nail some of the basics. Immersive sim fans will be in their element here, but Raphael Colantonio's latest won't have as wide an appeal as his previous successes with Arkane.

Wolfeye’s attempt to bring the immersive sim genre to an isometric game works well overall, albeit with a few hiccups in handling combat and looting. Fans itching for a game that allows freedom of choice in both story and gameplay at every turn should look no further than Weird West.

Weird West is smaller in comparison to Colantonio's previous games like Prey and Dishonored 2, but it's nonetheless ambitious and leaves a lot of choice in the hands of the player. A little gem that needs just a little bit of extra polish to shine even brighter.

With a fantastic roster of stories to play through and characters to interact with, Weird West is sure to please any fan of the Old West. Its mix of fantasy and spaghetti western tropes blends beautifully to create a memorable experience that twists and turns around the believable and magical. While there are a few niggles here and there, the overall experience feels polished throughout and WolfEye's attention to detail is noticeable in all aspects. The Weird West is beautiful, deadly, and free from constraining gameplay choices.

Weird West is a fantastic debut from Wolfeye Studios, a slick and addictive action-RPG that delivers a top-notch narrative alongside some delightfully chaotic combat in a world that absolutely oozes atmosphere. The Arkane DNA is evident here in the slick selection of powers and abilities, the choice-driven storylines and combat that gives you the tools to experiment, to toy with your enemies and approach problems from multiple angles. Side missions are delightfully well-written, there's a ton of dungeons, looting and crafting to dig into and, beyond a handful of buggy enemy encounters, the whole thing looks, sounds and plays like a dream.

There’s just so much to discover and learn for yourself. I didn't want to spoil the experience, because for me it was incredible. Gritty and majestic, all at once.
