Thumper

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Thumper is a rhythm violence game. It combines classic rhythm-action with breakneck speed and brutal physicality.

Thumper strips rhythm gaming down to its core. Classic rhythm-action is combined with breakneck speed and brutal physicality. With one analog stick and one button, you control a space beetle while hurtling through stunning and treacherous worlds. Each rhythmic hit, crash, and impact is interwoven with an original soundtrack by Brian Gibson of the acclaimed noise-rock band Lightning Bolt.

There’s no blood or gore, but you’ll feel the violence.

The basic move set of thumping, sliding, and turning is easy to learn. But as you careen onward, you’ll need to master new moves and survive adrenalizing boss encounters. To reach synesthetic bliss, you must go through rhythm hell.

And nothing can prepare you for the ultimate confrontation with an insane giant head from the future: CRAKHED.

I went through the campaign to the end, and this is the first time i've done this with any rhythm game ever. The angry drumbeats of the "music" you're making is meant to get you riled up. The game uses your heat-in-the-moment feelings to aid your performance. Good memorization of the patterns will get you very far as well. The controls are quite simple, you can get most movements done with the space bar or the X button. And the campaign mode is wonderful too. In the later game, you'll get the feeling that you aren't supposed to win, and i guess that's why Drool chose a beetle as your character. To make you feel like every level you pass is unexpected and the game gets more and more frustrated at you the further you go. The music is really good too. Even if it's not music. It's intense, it's supposed to get your heart pumping quicker. I really had fun with this game, and i would recommend to everyone.

An awesome rhythm game that constantly keeps you on your toes. This is far from a perfect game though I do feel there is some areas lacking. For one, while I think the idea of having the player replay sections of the game is cool, it just ends up becoming boring once you do have that section mastered. This feels more triumphant in the later parts of the game, but it feels boring up until then.During the late game however, the game treats the player even harsher than before by having sections where you ultimately have to die over and over again before you learn the pattern of a certain section. It doesn't really give the player a chance to just understand it when they first see it.I think this is a great game that I could see myself putting in the effort to 100%, but at the end of the day it's far from perfect.7.75/10

On a flat screen Thumper already seems like a near perfect video game experience but in VR it becomes its own reality, one that’s thrilling and unnerving in equal measure.

Thumper is a rhythm game with stylish visuals, great sound effects and responsive controls. It is also quite challenging, maybe even too much.Thumper is a rhythm game with stylish visuals, great sound effects and responsive controls. It is also quite challenging, maybe even too much. Finishing levels 6+ feels almost exhausting but very satisfying.
