Temtem is a shallow imitation of Pokémon, though the little things it does to mix up the formula go a long way at making it feel fresh. In its current form, it's no Pokémon rival, but being in Early Access means it has plenty of room to grow.

Already highly polished and nailing the essence of the monster catch battler RPG subgenre, Temtem looks set to go from strength to strength on PlayStation 5 if the surprisingly robust state of its early access debut is any indication.

The way stats and passive works as well as the fact you fight with two of them at a time makes this a different enough and more fun game. Endgame hunting for rare Temtem with high stats as well as breeding can be very tedious and become un-fun but at that point what else you expect from an early access game.

Unfortunately that excitement quickly became buyers remorse as I grew incredibly bored of the game by the third gym. The game held my hand too much and let me over level and basically sweep every opponent for 10 hours using just two pokemon. It was a snoozefest where it felt like the only real enjoyment I was going to get out of Pokemon was the endgame pokedex completion and perfect IV chasing.Enter TemTem. From the very start the game hits hard and doesn't hold back. It's challenging in all the right ways. It immediately introduces you to tactical gameplay and content that you'd only find at endgame pokemon games.The battle system is far superior. The2v2 format is wonderful, and the no RNG crit/dodge/feint/flinch philosophy is incredibly refreshing. It feels like a skill based tactical turn based strategy game which seems impossible to pull off, but Crema has done it.Things that seemed incredibly intimidating in the pokemon games like breeding or IV chasing are actually intuitive parts of the game that are introduced organically as you progress. Each zone is elegant and charming, and the world feels much larger than it actually is, which is a good thing. The storyline is also quite enjoyable and easy to feel invested in unlike Sword. TemTem is hands down better than Sword and Shield in every single way, and it's only early access. There are still dozens of WIP areas and zones yet to be revealed and new TemTem being released weekly until the game fully launches. It is well worth the $30.

This is what a decent taming game should look like on PC and/or console, instead of the 3DS-like port we received in Sword and Shield. I doubt Temtem will ever become as big as Pokemon, but they have certainly shown that a team of 18 people can do a better job than one of the biggest video game franchises in history.
