Main issue is that once you learn the most powerful move relatively early on, to save time you start spamming it constantly. There is not much incentive to vary things up as that single move is most powerful by far. By the end of it I turned the difficulty down to very easy to not waste time grinding and be done with it. There are some interesting mechanics for future games here, so I'll look out for the next instalment! Chemistry between the main leads was cute though.

It’s not an absolute slam dunk for the return of the Tales series, but it’s a solidly-crafted JRPG with a great battle system and fabulous environments to adventure through. It’s a shame the dialogue and story don’t match the stellar work done elsewhere, but on the whole it’s still a trip well worth taking.

It's an interactive story. It's go here, do this, go here do this etc. ad nauseum. Kind of like an 8-bit old school RPG. So, if you think about it, it's a wildly upgraded old-school RPG. If you can look at it like that, without all the extras we've come to expect from modern RPGS (meaningful dialogue, non-linear open world), but with the more simple aspects of RPGS (story, graphics, spell choices, animation, amount of available dialogue) amazingly upgraded, than this is a 10 out of 10 easy. Best of all, it's got a heart. Don't expect the world with this game, and you'll get the universe.

Tales of Arise is not only now my favorite Tales game to date, even surpassing my beloved Vesperia, it’s easily in my top 3 JRPG’s of all time, deserving to be compared to and alongside the best of the genre, and hands down my Game of the Year pick for 2021 without any hesitation. A compelling and complex story, wonderful character development, addictive combat, plenty of side activities to partake in like fishing or farming, stunning visuals and perfect audio are just a few reasons I can’t recommend it enough. Tales of Arise was an unforgettable masterpiece that I’ll surely play through again on NG+ eventually and anyone that’s a JRPG fan needs to play, the sooner the better.

The combat is not balanced, some boss was a lots harder i had to actually drop the difficulty. The AI is not that good, your friendly characters will not avoid danger. I feel the game was made so that you have to take DLC at one point.. if you don't you will easily have to grind a lots. Other than that i really liked the game, the characters developement are really amazing, i felt sad to lets them go at the end.

Overall, it sometimes feels like just moving on from each area to the next, with not much else in-between. Tales of Arise is a beautiful game to look at, but the game goes by too quickly due to the relatively limited side-questing. The last release in the Tales series, Tales of Berseria, offered a lot of gameplay in terms of extra content, and the story was enough to wrench your heart out. Tales of Arise offers a very compelling story but not much else in terms of extra gameplay.

A really good JRPG.I had a really fun time playing Tales of Arise and, after almost 100 hours spent with the game, when I think back whatA really good JRPG.I had a really fun time playing Tales of Arise and, after almost 100 hours spent with the game, when I think back what I enjoyed the most, I think the answer is “mostly all of it” but, particularly, it’s the combat.The improved action combat never felt boring to me, never felt like a chore and always made me want to engage into those enemies while roaming around the different areas, I barely skipped any enemies because the combat is just enjoyable.The one thing I would’ve loved as an extra bonus is the ability to cancel artes, or at least the normal attacks, into a dodge, but it is what it is, I got used to it.The different playstyles of each party member were also very well realized, there wasn’t a character I didn’t like and using them was very fun and interesting.The Boost Attacks and Strikes mechanic works pretty well and the epic animations that happen for the Strikes aren’t long at all, so it’s always a joy watching them over and over, they’re really well done.This game uses Unreal Engine 4 and I think it was a good decision to switch to a modern and versatile engine at last, because the older custom engine was showing its age.With UE 4, Arise shows that it’s a good engine for JRPGs, and especially combined with the new graphical effect they chose for the graphics here.But the PC port has launched with certain flaws, like a very poorly implementation of Steam Input, which made certain Xbox Controllers not work for many people, and needed to tinker with the Steam Settings, or a severe lack of proper Draw Distances that makes any NPC disappear from view 10 meters away from the player, and not only NPCs but also Shadows and most Geometry in general, had very obvious popping issues.The game also had resolution issues on certain screen setups, lack of proper ultra-wide support and stuff like that.Some of the issues have been partial or fully fixed by some awesome members of the community but, that’s no excuse, and Bandai Namco should at least release a proper patch for all these issues. They’ll probably take their sweet time though, if the issues are ever officially patched, that is : )Aside from those problems, which won’t affect everyone in the same way, my personal experience was that of a game that runs relatively smoothly, I had zero crashes or performance issues, so in the end my experience was quite enjoyable, once I downloaded a mod to increase the View Distance.On my R5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti the game runs quite fine even at 1620p DSR Downsampling and after I used a mod to unlock the Unreal Console, I could raise the internal scale to 170-180% and still stay at 60 FPS.The story in Arise is quite “familiar” if you have played other games in the series, or JRPGs in general, with the usual twists and turns. I liked it, and the characters are well written and acted.Played in English voices, and instantly recognizing Ray Chase as Alphen (Noctis from FFXV), and Erica Lindbeck as Shionne (Magilou from Berseria, Vita from Trails of Cold Steel) was quite fun, and the actors for the rest of the cast also did a really good job.Having Alphen react to fish in the water reminded me instantly of Final Fantasy XV, which had incredible fishing mechanics, it was so fun, so hearing the same voice actor say similar lines here was quite a throwback. He’s not the fishing expert in Arise though, but that’s okay, because Kisara is also a really excellent character.The new format for Skits, being fully 3D presented in a comic-panels style does work very well, I still like Zestiria and Berseria’s skits more, when it comes to style, but the new ones really made me realize that the change wasn’t bad at all, and I loved some of the more funny ones, there are a ton of them.The soundtrack in general is really high quality, and the new battle theme is very good, reminded me of some of Nihon Falcom’s themes, which is a good thing, but then some of the most epic pieces are just used in areas where you don’t expect such ominous music, like just walking around or something, haha, but that’s alright.The “Formidable Foe / Giant Zeugle” theme is back and remade for this game, once again, and that’s also nice to listen to when fighting these giant enemies.Overall, sound design could’ve been a little bit better because once in combat the music is quite overshadowed by the characters voices but…that’s usually what happens in the Tales series.All in all, this is one of my favorites games this 2021, I have enjoyed great JPRGs on the PC this year, like Trails of Cold Steel IV and Ys IX, both magnificent games with most excellent PC ports, and then with Arise I had a lot of great times with it, just as much as with those other two JRPGs I mentioned, despite the port not being up to those standards, but still quite enjoyable nonetheless.An 8/10 due to the mild PC port issues, hopefully they patch it.

On a whim, I decided to purchase Tales of Arise and try it out. Man. Let me tell you. One of the best purchases I've made this entire year in terms of gaming. The cast of characters are so intriguing, and each of them have dynamic and thoughtful backstories and motivations. The voice acting cast is absolutely fantastic. Honestly in a world where most people skip cutscenes or speed through dialogue, doing so in this game would be a complete disservice to the amazing plotline, and even yourself for missing out on some of the really thought and feeling provoking interractions and story arcs. The battle system is the icing on the cake here, with a near seamless combination of tactical and free flowing combat that feels somewhere between vintage RPG and Devil May Cry. Every single time I play this game, finding a stopping point seems harder and harder, as the impulse is to keep playing to see where the story is going next. Plus, you cant help but to feel emotionally invested in the characters and their goals and motivations. If I could rate this game higher than 5 stars, I definitely would

Later in high school, I got my PlayStation 2 with Final Fantasy 10. I was so absorbed with these fantasy games to a point that I can still reminisce very clearly the events and the journey that I experienced from these games. These games have impacted me so much that they shape me into what I am now.It has been so long since I felt like this until I play Tales of Arise. Although my playtime on the game while writing this review is just around 20 hours and probably around a third (or maybe half? I don't know) of the main story, I am enjoying my time so much with the game, combat, story, exploration, etc. Tales of Arise has a good medieval fantasy world-building and a group of friends with distinctive personalities. I am usually fond of mage classes in every fantasy game so I am mainly playing as Rinwell. The variety of magic is awesome and the ability to combine magic is fun as hell. Playing Tales of Arise gives me the feeling that I am inside that fantasy world and adventuring together with the party. Especially within the combat where they smash the enemy and help me on their own, it just feels like they are all real people fighting and adventuring together with me.Western RPGs in general give you a feeling like you are solo playing and the story plot and combat system are usually one-main-character focused. These qualities are not in itself a bad thing but they are just not my preference. On the other hand, while there are modern Japanese RPGs that are enjoyable like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Scarlet Nexus, and Persona 5 that have the quality of party adventure that I love, they don't have a classic medieval fantasy setting that I am yearning for. You know, the classic medieval fantasy setting like the ones that you see in Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 6, 9, 10 (and hopefully 16 too!!) or in the typical Japanese isekai manga/anime like Mushoku Tensei, Slime Tensei, Cautious Hero, Re:Zero, Shield Hero, etc.If you like these two qualities (ie. classic medieval fantasy and party adventure) you will probably be going to like Tales of Arise too. I am happy that Arise introduces me to the Tales series. I will definitely try some of the previous Tales games later.
