Super Daryl Deluxe

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Super Daryl Deluxe is a 2D action/comedy RPG with a focus on very customizable combat and absurdity.

You play as Daryl Whitelaw, a new student at Water Falls High School, a school that has been secretly taken over by a devious self-help author that plans to use the school as a front for an evil brainwashing scheme that will annihilate proper society as we know it.

Daryl will struggle to climb the social ladder, save a contraband textbook business, and tutor a princess locked deep in the heart of the school. His exploits will send him through time and worlds unknown where history and fiction mingle and come to life.

Utilize dozens of skills to create hundreds of unique four-skill combinations and blast your way through hordes of enemies and bosses, leveling and transforming your combat system as you play. You’ll be the most popular kid in school in no time, and you might even save the world.

Storyline

Super Daryl Deluxe follows an orange headband- and bellbottom- wearing adolescent who is forced to spend the height of his awkward teenage years in a new school that has, unfortunately, been taken over by evil self-help authors. His name is Daryl, and he just wants to make friends.

What starts out as an innocent effort to help jump-start a young contraband textbook business turns into a dangerous quest through the underbelly of the school (and all of the classroom-based dimensions therein) in the hopes of stopping the Honors Students from brainwashing everyone and offering the world up to the evil authors behind it all.

Boss fights involve light puzzle elements, but once you've figured out the gimmick, victory is quickly mashed out.

The aesthetic value of the production shows, however, that Dan Plate and Gary Porter certainly do not lack talent, but the important critical aspects of the work before the study clearly reveal the inexperience of the team.

From its art style and writing to its structure and design, Super Daryl Deluxe is strange. I enjoy the combat, humor, and the checklist structure of the quests, but the nondescript method by which you complete some missions mars the experience. Super Daryl Deluxe features multiple good ideas, but the execution is limited in its success.

Super Daryl DeluxeDon’t let this one pass you bySuper Daryl Deluxe is a metroidvania meets RPG game where you play as Daryl the new kid inSuper Daryl DeluxeDon’t let this one pass you bySuper Daryl Deluxe is a metroidvania meets RPG game where you play as Daryl the new kid in a multidimensional high schoolThe story here is probably the weakest aspect of this game, I just couldn’t follow along to the textbook selling business multidimensional strange principal story going on here... I quickly got tires of reading through the dialog and caring what was going on...but the level design and environmental story telling here is great...This is a bit of a fetch quest meets rpg brawler game..You go around different class rooms to collect items, both for main quests as well as side quests you’ll collect along your way and by collecting items and completing quests you’ll be rewarded with text books, experience and items...Text books can be traded in o unlock new moves for combat, all of which are tied to an action button and run on a cool down.. More are unlocked as you progress the game and you can level them up with unused textbooks as well as its own currency earned from enemies and quests.I got a very heavy stick of truth feel from this game, I was laughing at random spots the whole way thanks to the number of real life historical figures and references throughout the game. You can put on different items as long as they’re not too high of a level to increase your stats like an rpg, these items can be again obtained by completing quests, but are also dropped by enemies and can be purchased in store with the cash you collect as you play the game..Certain enemies drop certain materials though, which is what makes this fetch quest game so fun...you know what you have to get, and you have to remember which enemy drops that items and go farm them to get a certain amount of that item and turn it in, however the farming is more tied to side quests..Main quests are usually objective based of go to this person, or clear this room, go obtain this item, give it to another character that will give you the item you came to class for...these classrooms though aren’t just regular rooms.. They are all brought to life and feel unique from each other...This game took me well over 20 hours to complete, and not once did I feel bored...new enemies are constantly being introduced and new places give you higher level enemies so it never starts to feel easy..However I do feel this game over stays its welcome quite a bit... it says a lot that it took about 15 hours for me to be over it... but that feeling of will this please just end definitely came.. There is such thing as too much of a good thing, and this is an example, of that Each area does end in a challenging boss fight though, all of which feel fair and satisfying to complete, with maybe one or 2 a bit too easy…The most challenging aspect of this game though comes down to its lack of an auto save... to save the game you have to enter a restroom and quick save or manual save... this will refill your health…these rest areas aren’t that frequently though.. You could constantly run back and save after making tons of quest progress, but it just feels inconvenient having to do so...I would’ve preferred more of a checkpoint system here. .is I lost easily hours of progress to dying to random enemies on my way back from an area I just got a key item for...My biggest complaint with this game is how vague mission indicators are... an exclamation on a door to the target location would’ve been nice here as id occasionally be running around the school not sure where to get an item or get to a location the game told me to get toOverall though I really enjoyed my time with Super Daryl Deluxe, is one of those great indie games that deserves your attention..It has its flaws with progression delivery, but the world here is charming and magic. This is an addictive and challenging experience worth picking up.I give Super Daryl Deluxean 8/10
