Sublevel Zero: Redux

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Sublevel Zero Redux is a first-person roguelike six-degree-of-freedom shooter set in a universe where reality is falling apart. Take control of a lone gunship pilot whose mission is to loot and craft ancient technology. Descend into a vast underground facility, fighting through procedurally generated zero gravity environments to recover the technology you and your clan need to survive.

Inspired by classics such as 1996’s Descent and 1998’s Forsaken, Sublevel Zero Redux is the first classic 6DoF shooter on console in over a decade. Sigtrap have remastered, extended and improved their debut PC title Sublevel Zero to create Redux. New enemies, difficulty options and unlockable content make Redux the definitive version of the game.

If you were a fan of Forsaken or Descent from back in the day, Sublevel Zero Redux is a no brainer, as it plays great once you learn it, looks fresh, and sounds great. Sure, it has some hiccups, but if you didn’t grow up in that era or are new to this type of genre, it’s a decent game to jump in with, as long as you know it will take some dedicated practice to learn how to fly how you want to without having to think about it.

Sublevel Zero Redux is one of the standout shooters in the indie scene. Fusing "six degrees of freedom" shooting with permadeath, procedural generation, and crafting makes for a tense and unpredictable adventure each time you play. The rogue-like elements are enhanced by the tension of a traditional corridor first-person shooter, though it might feel a little simplistic to genre veterans. Some odd design decisions are a little frustrating, especially when they conspire against you in the game's more intense moments. If you can see past the game's hiccups, you will find a compelling and unusual experience that teases you into one last try with every Game Over.

A more than welcome return to the classic 6 degrees of movement FPS, with great levels variety and a challenging roguelike structure. What keeps it from really shining is a too repetitive gameplay, with enemies and bosses always requiring the same combat routines.

We are a space explorer who is dragged through a dimensional hole. From that moment his mission changes. If you wanted to cool and original shoot'em up this is your game; As long as its retro look and its short duration is not a problem.
