Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you’ll have noticed that there’s a lot of winter sport being shown on the TV. Yes, the Winter Olympics is here and it’s in full swing, showcasing the incredible talent of the world’s top athletes. Now I know what a lot of you have been thinking….. most of the competitors must be stark raving mad! Flying down mountains or around ice rinks at break neck speeds (fingers crossed not literally), performing tricks and stunts that none of us could even imagine attempting. Well the good news is that you don’t have to imagine any longer, thanks to the team at Ubisoft who brought you Steep.
Set in an open world situated in the Alps and Denali (formerly known as Mount McKinley), you have the option of donning a wing suit, commandeering a paraglider, jumping onto a snowboard or slapping on a pair of skis. You’re free to explore the stunning scenery or take on the numerous different challenges scattered across the huge map. The ‘Mountain View’ shows all the relevant drop zones that once unlocked you can freely teleport between. There’s also plenty of hidden races, challenges and secret areas to uncover.
There’s a big emphasis on the online multiplayer functions of Steep. You’ll often stumble across other players exploring the same area as you or taking on the same challenges and it’s all about getting the all-important win and subsequent bragging rights. Gain points by executing tricks and earn medals by winning races – who’s going to end up with the larger trophy cabinet?
But you don’t just get rewarded for nailing the perfect 1080 either! The kind folks at Ubisoft have made sure that those of us who prefer launching ourselves head first down a slope with no care whatsoever for personal safety, purely intent on getting the most air possible with a complete disregard for any sort of safe landing, will also get rewarded with points! Perfect!
