Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Serving as the exciting sequel to Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider follows the story of its heroine Lara Croft and her adventures in a fictional city in factual South America. She is in search of the roots of an evil parliamentary organization, which she aims to banish from the world: Trinity. On her journey, she comes across a holy dagger and ancient prophecies claim removing it from its current place will start bringing in the end of the world through a permanent solar eclipse. The apocalypse can only be reversed if it is reunited with a special silver box hidden somewhere in the rural Amazonian world and this reuniting will grant the deliverer all the power in the world. Lara ignores this warning and hopes by removing it, she'll prevent the dagger from falling into Trinity's hands. However, she's soon met by the leader of Trinity who confirms the prophecy and what's happening in the world, and steals the dagger from her in a bid to reach the silver box and control the world under Trinity's sinister plans. It is up to players to prevent this from happening.

Players take control of Lara Croft and enjoy this much-anticipated title from the expected third person perspective. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the series' largest in-game campaign settings and has the richest side stories to date, which allow players to fully experience Lara's journey through South America in the hidden and unknown city of Paititi. In a new addition to the game, Lara is able to trade materials and items with the local townspeople of Paititi in a bid to increase her success rates throughout the adventure and forge better equipment for her travels. This interaction with non-playable local characters forms a key element to the game and is a necessity to the game's overall completion. This breaks free from simply guiding Lara from point A to B, which has been the standard in previous instalments of the game. Shadow of the Tomb Raider also has the largest collection of tombs in the Tomb Raider series, which greatly increases the immersive experience of the title and provides a significant increase to the overall play time when completing Lara's quest.

The setting of the game draws its inspiration from Mayan and Incan mythology and these influences are prevalent throughout the game. There is a strong sense of historical accuracy as players will witness acts of sacrifice and ritualistic worship from the townspeople embedded within the setting and these acts are complete with traditional language voice overs and strikingly accurate visual depictions of the rituals taking place. The soundtrack also takes its inspiration from this with South American composition styles and instrument selections, and even includes recordings from native tribes with authentic music pieces typical to the region being selected to ensure total compliance with the setting being presented. This, too, adds to the overall immersion that players can expect from Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is hailed as one of the best releases in the Tomb Raider series with overwhelming positive reviews from critics and its strong community of players. Fans of the series are sure to enjoy what's on offer in this modern, yet historically-influenced game.
