There is no school like the old school! This game brings out the nostalgic arcade feels in the best way imaginable. Try every rocket and power up imaginable to be the last rocket flying, or the rocket with most kills on your belt, to be the Nuke King or plain spaceball champion. The universe at your gunpoint! Play it with friends, single-player is not really where it shines the brightest.

By all means grab a few mates and drop a quid or two into the pot for a night or two of hectic space shooting, but you’ll do well to still be playing Rocket Wars further down the line.

Local multiplayer games are nowhere near as big as they used to be and that’s mainly down to pretty much everything being online nowadays.Local multiplayer games are nowhere near as big as they used to be and that’s mainly down to pretty much everything being online nowadays. Don’t get me wrong playing online is an incredible amount of fun, but sometimes there’s nothing better than playing with a bunch of friends or family all together in one room. Rocket Wars is an old-school game that delivers this to you and despite its few shortcomings I found myself having a lot of fun with this game. Without a doubt this game is best enjoyed when played with friends or family because it’s a lot more fun when played this way. Don’t get me wrong you can still have fun playing alone but you will notice that you get bored a lot quicker playing it this way. Something that really impressed me about this game was the amount of variety included in the game modes you can play. Each game mode because of this is worth playing and this in turn keeps the game fresh and interesting for longer. I would however have also liked the same amount of variety included in the maps that you can play on, but this is only a problem when you play the game alone because you don’t really notice it when playing in a group. One of the most important aspects of a game of this ilk is definitely the controls, and thankfully they’ve done a very good job here. Everything about the controls remain tight and responsive throughout and I really like how they keep things simple because you can just focus on the action on screen instead of worrying about fiddly controls. In terms of content there is a decent amount for you to be getting on with, but without a doubt the best way to enjoy this game is to play it in short bursts. There is however a decent amount of replayability present though and that’s thanks mainly to the unlockables. There are an abundance of things for you to collect and on the whole there is a decent amount of variety present in each unlock. The presentation side of the game doesn’t do anything particularly wrong it’s just that it doesn’t do anything to make you sit up and take notice. Visually the game is a little generic and on the dull side and the sound design lacks variety so everything gets a bit samey quite quickly. At the end of the day Rocket Wars does what it sets out to do and that is deliver fun to a group. It may not be for everybody but if like me you like game’s where you can play all together and have some fun and enjoyable moments then you will thoroughly love this game. It’s not the best local multiplayer game I’ve ever played before but it’s a worthy addition to the genre and it gets a thumbs up from me.
