QBEH-1: The Atlas Cube

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

QBEH-1: The Atlas Cube is an atmospheric 1st-person puzzle platformer by Liquid Flower that takes players on an inspired quest through a variety of divergent worlds, each filled with new mysteries and secrets to uncover. In each world, players find special cubes that must be collected and used to navigate to the next portal. Some cubes will simply be used as stepping stones to new areas while others are imbued with magical properties such as gravity and propulsion.

Created by Liquid Flower, QBEH-1: The Atlas Cube is a prequel to their much beloved Qbeh, a small student project that found its way online and into the hands of gamers and journalists alike who wanted more after feasting on the appetizer. Now, QBEH-1: The Atlas Cube builds on the core concept and aesthetics introduced in the original and brings even more polish, passion and gameplay into the new game.

Finishing levels is for the most part straightforward. Finding the secrets may be a little challenging and is perhaps the more valuable side of the game.Do not expect any special rewards, achievements or a story - you just play till you finish.A level or two were unnecessarily challenging in terms of execution. This is annoying as the main goal of the game is figuring out what to do, not to do the perfect jumps out of 20 attempts. One other downside is the checkpoint system. If you happen to find a secret pyramid and then die, you might lose the pyramid, because you took it after you activated your last checkpoint. Not obvious and you need to replay either the full level or a relatively lengthy part of it, which gets tedious.

Qbeh-1 is a series of 36 different 3D mazes that are floating suspended in the upper atmosphere. Your job is to find your way to the end of each maze using increasingly specialized blocks to bypass obstructions. There is also at least one hidden secret in every maze which ramps the difficulty dramatically if you want to unlock everything. My play-through lasted about 40 hours according to Steam but I was taking it easy, often finishing each maze, then returning to find the secret later. If you like 3D puzzle games you'll surely like this one. I would have given it a 10 but there really isn't any story at all.

Honestly, there is little bad I can say about Qbeh-1. In a try-hard industry of pretentious or sloppy writing and presentation, Qbeh-1 teaches us that it’s sometimes okay to just be a game and nothing else. If you like challenging puzzles and enjoy a fun meditative zen aesthetic, get this game – it’s worth your time.
