Persona 5 Royal

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Persona 5 is a role-playing game developed by Atlus. It is chronologically the sixth installment in the Persona series, which is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. Persona 5 is a role-playing game in which players live out a year in the life of a high school boy who gains the ability to summon facets of his psyche, known as Personas. Dungeon exploration features additional elements from previous iterations, such as jumping across gaps or dashing between cover. Dungeons feature a mixture of fixed environments tied into the plot and theme, and randomly generated environments. Battles are based on a turn-based attack system, with the characters wielding both their Personas and two weapon types: a gun and a melee weapon. The Social Link element from Persona 3 and 4 also returns in an altered form.

Storyline

The story focuses on the 16-year-old protagonist after he is transferred to Syujin High School in Tokyo, Japan. Staying with friends of his parents, he meets up with problem child Ryuji Sakamoto, the withdrawn Ann Takamaki, art student Yusuke Kitagawa, and a talking, shape-shifting cat-like creature known as Morgana.

During the protagonist's time there, feeling suppressed by their environment, the five form a group known as the "Phantom Thieves of Hearts", working together to explore the "Palace", a castle created by the hearts of people, and steal ill intent from others' hearts to help them: during this quest, they confront adult authority figures opposing them, along with a greater enemy revealed by their activities.

The leads are a very colorful cast of miscreants and outcasts. Fun game with a great mix of challenge. Colorful and fantastical presentation, some cringe worth and silly dialogue, but hey they are a bunch of teens and adults trying to sound cool in front of said teens. The issues I have is the third act falls apart before and after the climax, the need for Atlus to make replay-ability like its predecessors. Only issue with that is they did not make any other reason, to do so, like other games in which you get different plot lines, alternate endings strictly for completing it multiple times, like Nier Automata or hell even New Gundam Breaker. The sole reason to complete it again is for the different personas, but then you realize, you have played the same dungeons, same side quest, four to five times for personas to beat the same dungeons and bosses you have already beaten several times before. The game is far from perfect, but it is still an awesome game.

Although 30 fps, the graphics are stunning from the anime avatar and scenes to the stylist menus and interface. Implanting a turn based combat is hard nowadays but Persona 5 is able to make combat so much fun. The music, weakness mechanic, varieties of personas, voice overs, and battle animations makes grinding the dungeons much more tolerable. The non-combat life gameplay is also just as good. There's enough places from Japan, activities, and people to bond with to distract you each day since the game goes by day to day. The moodiness story gives the atmosphere a sad feeling but gets more joyful and intense as the story progress. I'm also fond of the characters and their (English for me) voice actors that are correctly spaced out throughout the game. Easily this game takes up 100+ hours to finish from start to finish and you will get addicted. Persona 5 is perfect for anime JPRG fans and I think even if you aren't, there should be something appealing you will get if you decide to embark on this long and rewarding trip. P.S: Can't wait for the Royal Edition to come out, which would probably enhance the game more than I think.
