Oxenfree

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Oxenfree is a supernatural adventure game. Rites of passage and Senior year traditions set the stage for a group of friends sneaking off to Edwards Island, an old military outpost with no phone service. Players will take on the role of Alex as she brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party gone horribly wrong. Inspired by classic cult films like Stand by Me and Poltergeist, Oxenfree is an adventure that pulls from the past but looks to the present. “It’s a coming of age story where players control how their hero comes of age,” says Sean Krankel, co-founder of Night School. “We’re drawing on the fond and mortifying aspects of being in your late teens, and setting it against a dangerous and ghostly backdrop.”

Characters are not that likeable and the multiple choice answers sometimes cut off ongoing conversations which made me miss out on some dialogue. I also encountered a bug that made it unable to move my character and had to restart at a checkpoint. The whole game felt like it was targeted at a younger audience. The game is a walking simulator with easy puzzles and collectibles that piece together the backstory something that i generaly dislike in games and that for me artificially drags out the playtime. I prefer games that explain their story through normal gameplay and doesnt hide it behind collectibles. On a positive note: I liked the art style and music and the beginning of the game had me interested.

I was so enthralled I couldn't stop playing until I reached the end of the plot. Not so much of a challenging game, but it's very much a narrative driven experience. Absolutely worth picking up for fans of sci-fi-horror, and indie games.

Not for anyone looking for an abundancy of jump scares or bullet action. This is for someone who enjoys the idea of the paranormal, quirky dynamics like the continuous radio use to further the gameplay, and for those okay with a game that is more of a slow-burn. I enjoyed it thoroughly and am playing it again with different family members.

Thought it was going to be another "Firewatch" waste of time. Slow start, but wow, what a finish. Do yourself a favor and play this. I've been playing games for 30 years, and this holds the intellectual merits of a great game.
