Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the sequel to the epic action-adventure RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The narrative continues from the original (based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novels if you hadn’t guessed) and is set between the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Both Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War are also heavily influenced by Peter Jackson’s films (which can’t possibly be a bad thing right?). The story continues as you take control of Talion (a Ranger of the North) and the spirit of the elf lord Celebrimbor – who shares his body with him. Together they must forge a new Ring of Power to gather an army powerful enough to fight the mighty Sauron.
Shadow of War continues to use the award-winning Nemesis System which allows Talion to gain followers (it’s all people want these days) from other races across Middle Earth. Talion can then utilise these followers to complete missions and plan complex strategies. Great news for players of the original is that you can transfer your top nemesis and most loyal followers to the new game, so all that previous hard work is rewarded.
The game is set in an open world and is less of a hack and slash (like the original) and much more of an action RPG. The dynamic weather system and the day-night cycle can play a big part in your tactics and how you set about completing missions. And if all else fails and you just can get to grips with the game, don’t worry there’s an in-game store where you can buy followers and items to increase your abilities and generally just make you awesome!
