Survive rather than a full-featured Metal Gear reminds of a fanfiction, which wants to honour the series. Unfortunately, it gets repetitive very quickly and certainly does not take the right example from its predecessors.

Metal Gear Survive’s underlying concept is not bad and the game has a couple of good moments, but I can’t recommend it to anyone. It’s best to steer clear of it.

Using The Phantom Pain’s engine, its models, animations and other assets, Metal Gear Survive looks like a shoddy fan modification.

Bland and mediocre gameplay. Ludicrous hunger and thirst meters which made this game practically unplayable, not to mention the “always online” feature, are what’s making this game a great candidate to avoid.

When it was first announced by Konami and revealed to have not only a survival focus but (gasp!) zombies, a lot of folks, myself included, rolled their eyes at the idea. But after playing and completing Metal Gear Survive, it won me over. It’s an enjoyable, bizarre and flawed creation, and I’m glad it exists.

If you can wipe away all the preconceptions surrounding Konami, Hideo Kojima, and the Metal Gear franchise, you’ll find a competent game in Metal Gear Survive. The story is mediocre and the game has obviously cut corners to make the budget despite being full of microtransactions. However, it’s also fun as both a survival game and a horde defense game at times.

Metal Gear Survive is an intense survival experience that takes the exceptional gameplay of MGSV to set itself apart with a very entertaining game. However, this happens when it doesn't look like a MOD from the original and abusive micropayments don't interest you.

All of the issues that I’ve outlined with Metal Gear Survive essentially boil down to one thing: the vast majority of the game feels boring. It takes quite a long time for certain aspects of the game to stop feeling tedious, and its very easy to feel discouraged from playing altogether as it takes so long for the game to feel like its actually going somewhere. If you can be bothered to sit through hours of hunting, completing repetitive missions and accumulating skill points at a painfully slow rate, you’ll eventually feel comfortable enough to focus on the crazy story. If exploration and survival is your cup of tea, this one may be for you. If not, this is not worth your time.

Metal Gear Survive's greatest strength is that it offers many ways to play. Its survival gameplay creates a lot of freedom and variety, but sadly the unsteady co-op experience greatly limits the game's appeal. The story is underwhelming, and the game's overall balance has some problems.

For all the fervent hatred of Konami that forms the current gaming-hate-bandwagon of choice, based on its own merits, Metal Gear Survive isn’t a terrible game. It’s not a great one for sure, and certainly not near the pedigree we expect from a Metal Gear product, but it’s a serviceable enough survival game that benefits greatly from layering in a few of The Phantom Pain’s systems. It won’t scratch that same itch of sneaky badassery that has made Snake a household name, and it’s almost certainly not worth the full $40 / £35 asking price, but there’s definitely fun to be had here even if it doesn’t come close to troubling the series’ heights.

A solid survival experience, mostly shining in the single-player due to a content-lacking co-op mode. We would have liked better storytelling and a less repetitive and tedious first part of the game.

The single player, oddly, is the best part of Metal Gear Survive. I say “oddly” because it’s billed as a co-op game primarily. But the online multiplayer is just sort of “Horde Mode”, and we’ve all done that again and again for a decade now.

Overall, Metal Gear Survive is a great game. No, really. I don’t blame anyone for taking issues with the company that produced it, but it’s clear that the developers really put in the time and effort to make something worthwhile. There are some obvious issues with the story and one blatant microtransaction cash grab, but Survive has a ton of genuinely enjoyable content for its budget price. If you’re looking for a Metal Gear fan service game with a tacked on survival mechanic, this isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a survival game with a Metal Gear paint job, it’s well worth looking into.

Not your typical Metal Gear, but a bold move for the series. Great controls and visuals, bur the survival aspect is not unique and will not appeal to all fans.

Despite the backlash from fans decrying that Metal Gear Survive isn't a true Metal Gear game, what's available in this $40 package is a hundred-plus hours of one of the most polished survival games to ever make it onto consoles.

If it had not been called Metal Gear Survive, this survival game would have been received in another way. However, many of the questionable decisions such as micropayments or permanent connection tarnish a remarkable gameplay based on The Phantom Pain.

Now after a few hours I am really enjoying this game. The gameplay and progression has a welcoming pace. I bought it thinking it’s a “game-as-service” type game where you log in and do a match or two online but was surprised by the campaign content. It’s nothing extravagant and is like a B horror film in some ways which is good because it knows it’s a spin off and doesn’t damage the Metal Gear brand. I like how you can mold this character that comes to life in the cinematics and story. Your ‘avatar’ grows as you play, learning skills and being able to play different classes. In campaign, the survival part is realistic where you have to hunt for food and gather water, otherwise you can start losing health and stamina and eventually die. It has a Breath or the Wild feel in those mechanics. You gather parts all over and build up your base as you see fit to defend yourself from different types of infected mutants. There are daily, weekly and monthly challenges that net you different resources for unlocking content so you can log in daily for a short time and still progress. I’m playing on the Xbox One X and the HDR and enhancements look great on the screen, I hope MGS5 Phantom Pain gets similar enhancements in a patch. If you see it for what it is, I think you will enjoy what the developers have created here. This is not meant to be an important entry in the Metal Gear series, but instead a way to have fun with the world and mechanics in a different way and in that it succeeds. It’s also priced fairly for what it is. The only gripe I have so far is if you want to create a new avatar, you have to either delete your first one, log in as a different account, or buy a character slot for coins which I think (not sure) are only available via real money. I will update the review after I spend more time with it and get to play the online.

Survival means there is not much ammo so they patch in a really basic and crude melee combat system that doesn't do any good, what's worse our character becomes hungry every 5-10 minutes and each time there is an annoying warning that pops up. Ghost Babel, Acid, Portable Ops and Rising are much better spin-offs than this game.It would be better if Konami completed MGS5 by making several more missions for MGS5 and thus shows how Punished "Venom" Snake formed the Outer Heaven, and thus directly connects the story of MGS5 with the original Metal Gear from 1987. And after completing MGS5, then Konami should make a remake of the original Metal Gear 1 and 2. Then make a remake of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the PS4. This game is god awful. This isn't Metal Gear any more than Fortnight's original game mode is. It's just a bunch of reused assets from MGSV inThis game is god awful.
