MechaNika is a weird and wonderful experience that won't be for everyone. The story is bizarre and worthwhile, touching on some pretty serious points. You meet fascinating characters and will spend an enjoyable hour or so finding everything you need to complete the game. The point and click mechanic definitely feels like it needs some work to make it behave optimally for consoles, and you might be disappointed how soon you get to the end of the story, but it is one well worth experiencing nonetheless.

The presentation has a weird and wacky vibe dotted throughout and both the visuals and sound make the game stand out quite considerably. IThe presentation has a weird and wacky vibe dotted throughout and both the visuals and sound make the game stand out quite considerably. I found the story in the game to be quite charming because it has an array of different emotions and it never fails to make you laugh. There’s a decent selection of puzzles for you to work through and I must admit that the creativity in some of the puzzles surprised me. Each character in the game is unique and talking to them is not only interesting but it also makes the gameplay stand out more as well. The difficulty curve in the game never causes you a problem and the easy to pick up and play style allows you to focus on other important aspects. Unfortunately in terms of content there isn’t a great deal and you end up completing the game quite quickly. I found the puzzles to be engaging and enjoyable it would’ve been nice if the gameplay had a little more depth to it. From the moment I started MechaNika I could tell from the game’s presentation that I was going to enjoy this game a lot, and thankfully that was exactly the case. One thing that really makes this game stand out is its story and that’s mainly because it is dark and funny at the same time. The characters also make the story stand out as well because you can tell that each character has had a lot of thought and effort placed into them and this without a doubt makes each character interesting and unique. In terms of the gameplay there isn’t a great deal of depth present here which may be off-putting for some. That being said the gameplay that is present has been done well and each puzzle is pretty creative which makes completing them fun and rewarding. In fact the game always feels fun because the game never gets too difficult and the easy to pick up and play style that’s present in the game means you never get frustrated at all. At the end of the day then even though there isn’t a huge amount of content for you to get to grips with the content it does have is fantastic and when you combine that with the cheap asking price of the game MechaNika is definitely a game that gets a big thumbs up from me.

MechaNika, although short, is one of the funniest puzzlers in recent memory. There’s next to no difficulty as far as its gameplay loop is concerned, but this game is much less about complexity and much more about the journey at hand. On that score alone, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any game of the like that remotely relays as much character and wit as MechaNika does.

How about telling people that this is a fraction of a game at the point of sale? It’s only a tiny £2.80, as you’d hope for something less than two hours long, but the principle remains: if something’s episodic, you say so. Starting with putting it in the title.

MechaNika is a unique concoction of childlike presentation and mature content that doesn’t seem to know which audience it’s trying to please, and never quite manages to fulfill its own evident potential.
