Loot River is certainly a roguelike unafraid to explore new waters, but what it lacks is a refined loop. Constantly repeating the run, even in different dungeons, isn’t an easy concept to float. However, the game’s unique movement mechanics and visuals do a lot of work to sell the experience. If you’re looking for a roguelike that’s going to punish you, then check this one out, but try not to be too shocked when you realise there are no life jackets provided.

I normally tend to steer away from Souls-like as it’s not my genre of choice. Coupled with being a roguelike, I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy it in the slightest bit. Loot River surprised me though with its interesting and unique puzzle mechanics, and while not perfect by any means, “Souls Meets Tetris” is something I never thought I would write, but here we are. Factor in that Loot River is also currently available on Game Pass and it’s a hard title to pass up trying to see if it click with your genre preferences.

It feels like Loot River has difficulty in committing to the type of game it wants to be. For a roguelike, the runs feel too short, with too much blocked off. For a roguelite, the run-to-run progression is too lacking to be engaging.

Loot River is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination; it, like many new IP’s just needs some tweaking to iron out some of its technical issues and I have no doubt that with its truly unique blend of traditional roguelikes with a dash of a block puzzler, that Loot River will quickly carve out a place for it on the ever-growing roguelike mountain.

Loot River feels like an unfinished product as some mechanics don't work probably on many occasions, and the content doesn't do much to encourage beginning another cycle.

Dark Souls meets Diablo and spices it up with a bit of Tetris in this original “shifting” action-roguelike that will test both your combat skills and your wits.

An entertaining roguelite that will start to hook you up with the original "Tetris" mechanic, and then with its great soulslike vibes, the beautiful pixel art and all the runs you'll have to conquer to uncover all the secrets and lore. If you love the genre you probably love it, even if it needs a little bit more polish on controls and bugs.

It's unfortunate that Loot River feels like an Early Access product in its current state. A scarcity of content and a thoroughly unfinished, unsatisfying feel to the combat, movement, and item discovery makes this title very hard to recommend.

If it featured more deliberate combat and less ambiguous visuals, Loot River would have been an awesome game due to its uniqueness.

It just doesn't flow nicely like other top-down roguelikes (Hades, Dandy Ace etc.) Swordplay feels artificially stiff and awkward with a dodge roll that sometimes works and sometimes not. I understand that there should be maybe more of a "Dark Souls" style feel to the combat but for now it feels frustrating bad, not challenging but fair good.The art style is fine and I like the grittiness of it.BUT the gameplay loop and the feel of constant progression that makes games like these addictive and fun just isn't there. This just doesn't suck you in like it's contemporaries.I really hope they fix this game with smoother combat. I will come back to correct myself. But for now, I'm happy this was on Game Pass and I did not spend money on this. Play other roguelikes for now and come back to this when it's good.

To say Loot River is a game mechanically and visually enticing would be to downplay just what makes a game of this stature such a treat to repeatedly explore. Unusual a pitch it might’ve sounded, the eccentric implication that “Dark Souls meets Tetris” isn’t entirely unwarranted. In a game whose novel implementation of movement alone is one with a plentiful amount of offensive, defensive and tactical potential, let alone a mere tool for traversal that can be as equally costly as it is a helpful aid. Just like its technical niceties that add so much to the pixelated aesthetic, it’s what the game doesn’t reveal at the outset — and thus, that desire to figure out the true path to success — that is by far the most impressive thing about Loot River. One that not only justifies its quirky alternative to run-based progression, but through it transforms the game from that of a humble roguelite into one that, strangely enough, is just as much puzzle-platformer as it is grueling dungeon-crawler.

The technical problems that surround Loot River are undeniable. Yet, it is fascinating how we keep thinking about getting back in those flooded corridors as soon as possible. Facing a game that forces you to restart your run because the boss got stuck between platforms and now is, somehow, invincible, one would think that that game will be soon uninstalled. Yet, perfection is overvalued nowadays. We prefer those who dare.

Loot River is a complete, difficult and well packaged work. A unique mechanic that of the Tetris-style platforms, which lends itself well to the game world created by the guys of Straka Studio. Too bad for the mole represented by that problem with the hitboxes and animations of certain characters. Overall, however, the game is more than good, fun, challenging and will keep you hooked for a long time.

Action, roguelike, shifting levels, environmental puzzles “a la Tetris” and simple but clever combat mechanics. Despite some minor flaws, Loot River is definitely one of the best Indies of the year.
