Complains about inadequate resolution, but provides no way to change it. Texts too small to be read, but no options to increase size or scaleComplains about inadequate resolution, but provides no way to change it. Texts too small to be read, but no options to increase size or scale the UI. Of course, it's a text-heavy game. That's what you get when clowns decide to write software.

I got Eisenwald in early access, and it shown great promise. Now that the game is finally out and I got through several maps, I found that II got Eisenwald in early access, and it shown great promise. Now that the game is finally out and I got through several maps, I found that I lost interest fairly quickly. The premise of the game is not new - move around the map in semi-real time, fight encounters on a hex grid battlemap. Collect loot, level up, eventually get a couple castles, while continuing through the story. The game takes an unorthodox approach to storytelling - everyone is a bad guy, but does not think they are and rat out their neighbors. This pattern repeats throughout the game where the player is left to decide who's the lesser evil.Tactical combat has potential for the first couple maps, but after this you will settle into more or less same combination of units, where you train them (from militia to footman to knight). This gets old after a while.Tactical map rules are quite cut and dry - you can only attack the closest enemy. The AI is still pretty poor, and the game attempts to balance this "challenge" by filling enemy ranks with spearman and pikemen. Seriously, you will see ridiculous amounts of enemy spearmen, guards and pikemen - characters that have first strike ability. They are fairly useless for the player who is forced to attack all the time, but make a lot of fights very annoying and increase grind times as you pay through the nose to heal your troops. The strategic map action is pretty boring - bandits will recapture your villages or outposts dozens of times, you will go to the same areas to grind the same bandits. Apparently enemy levels up over time, so if you leave some bandits in a corner of the map, they will eventually start to wear plate armor and have warlocks with them. There are better titles with more fun game mechanics, for example Kings Bounty series, which offers a lot more variety of units and better special abilities, as well as more interesting exploration.

Legends of Eisenwald is one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises that we engaged with this summer. Intriguing storytelling, thrilling plot twists and ambiguous morale decisions are wrapped up in an excellent medieval/ feudal environment. The simple yet addictive turn based battle system, the many upgradeable military units and a well built economic system, raise the game’s status to “totally recommended” for the genre’s fans.

Every aspect of the game could stand to be improved a little: economic system is superfluous, leveling is hard at the beginning and much easier towards the end, and it’s always weird to take a castle with just a bunch of soldiers. But the atmosphere trumps everything. After all, it’s been a long time since anyone tried to make an RPG in at least quasi-historical setting.
