Parent Game: Jack N' Jill
Jack N' Jill DX

Know somebody who might be like this game?

Summary

Once upon a time, Jack and Jill, went up the hill, to fetch a pail of water. It didn’t particularly end well for them, and to be honest, things aren’t exactly great for another Jack and Jill either.

In Jack N’ Jill DX, players must assume the role of Jack, overcoming many hazards, in a bid to reach Jill, who awaits him at the end of 140 levels, in typical old-school one-button platformer fashion! But, for the players who feel the guy should be the one who needs saving, we absolutely agree and that’s why Jill is available as a playable character as well! All you need to do, to play as her, is swap the graphics and hey presto, the change is complete!

Whoever you choose to play as, as you run and jump to your friend’s rescue across 7 worlds, you will do so to the sound of a chiptune soundtrack that will transport you back to the golden age of video gaming. But the old school feels, don’t end there. With grey-scale monochrome graphics and easy to learn controls, yet addictive gameplay, it will even feel like a game straight up from the days of old, as well. Will you rise to the challenge of reuniting them?

It is a simple and repetitive venture, but one which does fulfill its promise of providing fairly fun and engaging platform levels, of which there are plenty. Unfortunately, this experience comes within a plain world which contains repetitive music and bad sound mixing.

Everything about the game seems to make sense. It also isn’t anything you’ll fall in love with. Without substance, I can’t imagine anyone spending more than a few hours playing. Luckily the game is also on par with its price point. If you like easy achievements then, by all means, you can do it in one small gaming session. On a mobile device, this would be a pretty good time killer, but I can’t really say the same for a console.

Jack N’ Jill DX offers quite a decent portion of content in return for its very generous asking price. I take issue with the game’s simplicity and its utter lack of difficulty, ultimately making for an adventure that can literally be completed with just one finger. However, with that being said and despite its repetition, its homage to the Game Boy era remains somewhat endearing throughout.

There’s a huge amount of levels for you to work through and I really enjoyed playing each level because there’s a decent amount of variety included. The mini games are a nice little feature because they give the game some replaybility and they do a good job of mixing up the usual gameplay. There isn’t a huge amount of depth to the gameplay I still really enjoyed it because only being able to use one button definitely gives the game some unique qualities. Technically the game suffers with no problems and this meant I never got frustrated during my time with the game. There isn’t much of a challenge present even when you get far into the game. Some sort of a story would’ve been nice because the character’s in the game are very charming and a story would’ve made them even more charming. I went into playing Jack N’ Jill DX with not very high expectations but what I got is something that surprised me a great deal and in the end it provided me with quite a lot of fun and enjoyment. It’s very minamilist in design and it doesn’t take long to get the hang of but for me that’s what made the game so charming and fun. In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to be getting on with and it does offer some replaybility as well thanks to the mini games that are present. Technichally the game suffers with no problems and this does allow you to enjoy the unique gameplay more. The reason I said the gameplay is unique is because you only use one button and this works in its favour in my opinion. Thankfully the game doesn’t suffer with many problems at all and the only thing I would change is that I would make the game a little more challenging because it is quite easy. That being said it still didn’t stop me from having fun and when it’s all said and done Jack N’ Jill DX gets a solid thumbs up from me.
