Storyline

Receiving news of her father's death, Catherine Ironfist, Queen of Enroth, sails for Erathia to attend her father's funeral. Fearing the worst, she assembles a military fleet as her escort. Arriving on the coast of Erathia, Catherine finds an allied wizard's tower, devastated from battle and abandoned. There she learns Erathia is falling to its enemies. Mustering local armies, Catherine marches to Erathia's capitol, restoring lost land along the way. Rescuing Erathia's besieged capitol, Catherine learns her father was poisoned with a goblet of wine. Setting herself up as queen, Catherine goes to war to restore Erathia's borders and discover her father's murderer. In the course of war, in an attempt to counter Catherine's recent successes, her enemies resurrect her buried father as an undead lich and make him general of their armies. Fighting her dead father's undead armies on the battlefield, Catherine continues her murder investigation and learns one of her most trusted generals was responsible. At the war'sconclusion, Catherine and her armies surround the last standing. Battling to the throne room, Catherine and her generals come face-to-face with Erathia's former king, now their undead enemy. From her assembled generals, Catherine points out the traitor. The undead king attacks and kills his murderer as Erathia's allied generals stand by and watch. Hunched over the dead body of his killer, the lich turns to the woman he named Catherine and once called daughter. Using a spell book, Catherine summons a lightning bolt from the sky and destroys her undead father. Sitting to the throne of her vanquished enemy, Catherine speaks, "Rest in peace father."

It consist of the main game “The Restoration of Erathia”, the “Armageddons Blade” expansion and the “Shadow of Death” expansion. On a sidenote: This is actually far better than the HD edition from 2015 as these lacked the expansions because the source code was lost. For me and many others it is the best game in the franchise. The mixture of exploration, strategic battles and base building was as enjoyable as addicting. The basics are easy to learn and have a lot of depth to master. Description: You are a commander of an army of various units or creatures and building / developing structures in your stronghold. There are various factions with individual strongholds and units. Per round (= 1 day) you can build a structure or upgrade an existing requiring gold and resources. The structures let you recruit a fixed number of new units at the start of each week for an amount of gold. Stronger units require more structures before you can recruit them. Upgrades let you hire stronger versions with better stats and/or new abilities. Other structures give additional benefits like defensive structures, a mage tower that lets you learn spells or unique structures for each stronghold. For the exploration or battle part you maneuver your character including recruited units over the map (Range depends on slowest units, terrain and learned skills). Your character is not a unit you can use in battle. He / She is the commander or general. However he / she is far from useless. Your attribute-points are added to your units fixed attributes. This made them more powerful and at high levels even low tier units can outclass high tier ones without this bonus (Warning also applies to enemy commanders units). Also you can use spells which can be devastating especially at expert levels (skill at max level needed). There are various items you can find that boost your attributes or skills. Important is that you capture mines / woodcutter hoods and find deposits of materials as these are needed for upgrades of your strongholds (Reach them and you get a fixed amount of resources per day as long as no enemy reaches them afterwards). As you level up you can learn skills. These can vary from doing more damage, high morality (chance of a second action per unit per turn), better spells like for example expert level buffs / debuffs effect all units instead of just one (Devastating effect and I underestimated this by far) or higher moving range up to special skills like diplomacy that lets you recruit units sometimes instead of fighting them (Not available in battles with enemy commanders). Of cause there are items for your character to equip and even combinations of multiple items that lead to far more powerful artifacts (Some are game-breaking). You have 18 different campaigns (6 per game/expansion) but some must be unlocked. These have an overarching story and tell good stories. I favor the ones from Armageddons Blade but will warn you that these are a bit more difficult in comparison. There are also single map scenarios and a map editor with a lot of functions for you to explore. I say there is enough content for at least 50-100 hours. The graphics aged well as the maps look hand-drawn and the art style of the heroes / units is fitting and beautiful. The soundtrack was always good. What makes it great was the combination of great gameplay, a good presentation and a lot of content to explore. Overall I see this as timeless classic and as best game in the franchise. I returned to it once in a while as it is still a great experience.
