The fusion of shooter and match-3 mechanics does work, and while it’s hard to keep on top of the situation, practice certainly helps. What doesn't work so well is the amount of fun on offer as Galacide quickly becomes frustrating. It’s fun for a short blast, don't get me wrong, and if your life has a shooter/match-3 shaped hole in it this will fit perfectly, but at the end of the day the game kind of falls between two stools.

Galacide must be commended on its attempt to mix up the Shmup formula; by adding in the Match 4 elements it provides more challenge than simply (ha, simply) dodging bullets and shooting down ships. Unfortunately this innovation comes at the cost of being able to easily read the screen, and accurately utilise the mechanics to progress. A worthy curio then, but not one to rush out and play.

Galacide combines the frenzied action of classic space shooters with the focused, fast-thinking tactics of puzzlers. Choose from a variety ofGalacide combines the frenzied action of classic space shooters with the focused, fast-thinking tactics of puzzlers. Choose from a variety of ships, each equipped with unique features and abilities. Embark on your mission to tunnel through the strengthening alien invasion, find the source, and save the galaxy. Go it alone or assemble a squad of your friends to battle in the most unforgiving corners of the universe. It’s hard to tell which part of that equation gets the biggest billing. On the face of it, the game looks like a straight forward horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up in the classic style of R-Type, Nemesis and Darius. The main campaign mode offers just six stages (and a tutorial) and these are pretty brief, clocking in at just a few minutes each. We do prefer our shoot ’em ups to be too short rather than too long but Galacide definitely could have used a couple more levels just to pad things out and while we’re having a quick nag, the stages are all also very similar. So in the end it almost feels like It was rushed to the gamers, maybe the budget didn't allow for more but at least it left me wanting more.

Although brief, Galacide executes its idea well. Unless you're playing at the higher difficulty levels, the puzzles and shooting don't conflict, and the pacing of each element is done well.

Galacide comes from an interesting idea but it’s penalized by the lack of a strong identity and by an insufficient balance between the two genres that it wants to join.
