I'll take the deduction for the frustration at the beginning out of my rating as best I can.The details, as well as the driving physics, are absolutely up-to-date and great - nevertheless, in terms of gameplay, this game suffers from the fact that it wants to be a strong arcade racer with the legacy of simulation. The events seem rather lovelessly strung together, the podcast as accompaniment is simply annoying and I can't stand so many colors beyond 'Trailblazers', where it belongs.Nice as a casual racing game, it's definitely a good one to pick up on sale. However, I don't feel anything of the fever that DiRT 3 & Showdown triggered in me.

Thing is that I’m also currently working my way through Forza Horizon 5 on PC and comparing these two titles just isn’t fair for Dirt 5. Graphics wise there isn’t a huge difference but as far as gameplay goes… Dirt really feels like you’re driving a 90’s arcade racer. Terrible acceleration and braking that feels completely inconsistent depending on if you’re in first or last place. Bouncing off of walls and obstacles when you accidentally go too far off track. Don’t even get me started on the drifting, that’s just as unrealistic as it gets. The sound isn’t much good either, engine sounds are pretty basic and get annoying after a while. I do like the soundtrack, a lot of energizing songs in the playlists. I’m not sure how I would have felt about this game if I had played it when it was just released but probably wouldn’t be much better than my current experience.

DIRT 5 is an excellent, stunning and simply enjoyable arcade racer that is easy for anyone to pick-up and play regardless of your motor vehicle knowledge with a career mode that is surprisingly entertaining. You may want to pick it up on PlayStation 5 though since it feels awesome to play with the new DualSense features.

Codemasters truly are the experts of their craft. DIRT 5 is a step in a different direction that will be met with some fans not enjoying the rather arcade-style gameplay, but it is absolute joy for those do like this type of fast-fluid party action. There is enough variation in track diversity thanks to the dynamic weather and track terrain conditions to help keep DIRT 5 fresh.

If you’re already a fan of the Dirt franchise, there’s little to take issue with here – jump right in. If you’re a racing fan who’s new to the series, though, I can definitely say Dirt 5 is worth a look.

DIRT 5 on the PS5 is the best version of the game to get on PlayStation consoles, when it works. That’s a big caveat, and most gamers will not want to have to constantly remember to pre-emptively upload their save game after a few races, or risk losing hours of progress due to one unfortunate crash. This also necessitates a PlayStation Plus subscription, since copying PS5 save games to USB storage is unfortunately not an option as of this writing. Assuming these issues get patched out, then it is easy to recommend buying this on the PS5, because DIRT 5 is a showcase racing game for the next generation of consoles with its smart use of haptic feedback and ray tracing, all while delivering a smooth performance.

Dirt 5 can afford to be vain, because it’s the kind of game you play because you think the levels are pretty. And you’re not wrong. They’re very pretty. But it’s not the game you play if you want to play a racing game. It’s barely the kind of game you play if you want to play a driving game. It’s the kind of game you play if you just want to move through pretty levels, which is something lots of videogames do these days. So Dirt 5 at least has that going for it.

The last-generation version of DIRT 5 truly feels like a beta in comparison to this product. The game was designed with the PS5 hardware in mind and shouldn’t have seen a release on the PS4. Pair that with a banger soundtrack, a decent amount of content and a functional four player-splitscreen and you have one of the better arcade racers on the PS4.

Dirt 5 represents a complete about-face for the main Dirt series, shedding virtually all semblance of simulation in favour of an unabashed, arcade-inspired racing experience that draws from just about every influence you can name except its direct predecessor. It’s not especially deep, and there isn’t as much variety in the career mode as it claims, but it’s fast, frantic, and extremely handsome, and the wild and wacky stunt track editor truly has its hooks in me.

One of Codemasters' best racing games, DIRT 5 is an unbridled shot of adrenaline-fuelled fun that's impossible not to love. Superlative stuff.

DiRT 5 does not bring anything revolutionary to the arcade driving genre, but it does manage to set the saga in a territory where no one can doubt its existence. DiRT is still DiRT, an episode that takes the best of the first three numbered installments and does not forget to provide the excellent set design of the Rally side. This anarchic philosophy is enjoyed at the controls, but it suffers from a series of technical problems and graphic finishes that are below expectations. A remarkable title specially designed for lovers of the saga and four wheels, but which fails to establish itself as a benchmark in its genre.

Overall, DIRT 5 fixes everything that was iffy about the prior entry and does so in a way that breathes new life into the long-running series. DIRT 5 has smoother controls and more versatile framerate options than prior entries have had – at least on consoles – and the addition of non-position objectives helps makes races more replayable and a bit more fun since you may have to step outside of your comfort zone, or more accurately, increase your comfort zone over time, to fully embrace it. Dirt 5 immediately feels like a classic off-road romp of explosive proportions. Customisation options fizzled too soon for my taste, but this is still a solid title for any arcade-sim race fan.

Dirt 5 is a content-rich, diverse arcade racing game that is unlike anything else among racing titles of this year. Codemasters’ new direction in the Dirt franchise might not be what veteran off-road enthusiasts would’ve expected. Still, Dirt 5 accomplishes its mission of expanding to a broader audience with engaging arcade-y gameplay, and sets the series off on an exciting new path.

DIRT 5, sets out to offer an arcade style racing game with an in-depth narratively driven career mode, and an array of other exciting modes for all to enjoy. The graphics and environments on display are stunning, with an immersive sound design to tie it together. The Playgrounds mode offers an endless sea of creative possibilities for players to test their skills, while chasing the top spot on the global leaderboards. All of these features are a wonderfully wrapped gift, that comes together to create one of the most fun racing games to date.

The style absolutely works in Dirt 5, offering up accessible rally racing to anyone interested in getting behind the wheel. Of course, the drive is what you make it. So should you want to become a master racer to take on other skilled players online, that option is also easily available to you so long as you're willing to put in the time.

Even with an enhanced version on the horizon that includes 120 fps with the arrival of next generation consoles, Dirt 5 delivers a fantastic off-road racing experience full of content that will keep you busy not only on the track, but also off with the addition of the new Playgrounds arena editor. Considering there is a free upgrade to the next-gen version as well, there is no reason not to go ahead and pick this one up if you were at all interested, especially if you are a fan of the franchise.
