The framework for something much more compelling exists underneath the prattle, inconsequential combat, and shallow character development, and you can catch a glimpse at what might have been in some of the story’s better moments. I hope Hyde and Bandai get the opportunity to create another visual-novel-style Digimon game, building on Survive’s foundations to create a lasting and more memorable experience.

Sometimes the characters can be a little one-note, but each manages to carry aspects of the story in compelling ways, and I wanted to keep pushing through Digimon Survive to unravel each person's history and ultimately learn why and how they had been transported to another world. But, at the same time, Digimon Survive is regularly dragged down by tedious tactical combat, and it negatively affects other sections of the game too, like exploration and Digimon evolutions. It's not enough to ruin an otherwise great visual novel, but it does put quite a damper on the whole experience.

Digimon Survive is a fantastic game, which manages to mix visual novel and tactical RPG in a masterful way, offering a perfect symbiosis between both genres. Its story will be able to grab us from beginning to end, and its deep combat system will guarantee us some really fun playable stages. To all of this we must add the finishing touch of an unbeatable audiovisual section, resulting in a truly rounded product.

One would assume we would get an experience akin to Pokemon, since Digimon is an enhanced Pokemon, but the developers were too smart for that. The developers are such hard workers, they made the anime in the start a whole 5 minutes. All of the other cutscenes are also great, in a brilliant expression of this game's excellence. The story is biblical. The combat is well made and brilliantly designed. The graphics made me cry due to their beauty when I first saw them. It looks better than a handcrafted painting from Leonardo Da Vinci. The physics are beyond lifelike.There is no multiplayer. That is not a problem, because the replay value of this game more than makes up for it. Another great quality of this game is that, all of the characters speak in their original Japanese voice actors, and yet the devs still only charged 60 dollars for this art piece. This incredible generosity enlightens me. I recommend this game to all my friends, family, and more.

You don’t need any previous knowledge of Digimon, and even with my own extensive history with the franchise there were still plenty of twists I didn’t see coming because the story was just that compelling.

Though not as successful as Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Digimon Survive has the workings of a cult classic mainly for Digimon fans. The story, despite a few insufferable characters, explores a darker reinterpretation of the original series to its favor, and the combat system is executed moderately well for as simple as it is. The game’s art style and music have its moments too from composer Tomoki Miyoshi and artist Uichi Ukumo. However, many plot points drag on longer than necessary, the Karma system is forced, and the UI is lackluster. Developer Hyde has a spark of a good idea here, but it might not last long enough to merit a sequel.

Digimon Survive is one of the best visual novels to come out so far this year, with plenty of heart and tension to carry you through to the final act. Fans looking for an engaging story with well-written and presented characters that deal with life-and-death situations will enjoy the ride, while players focused on the combat will probably find that the game comes up short. The result is something like Lord of the Flies, where the kids constantly argue and some even start to lose their grip on reality.
