The Darksiders series has always been a bit of a oddity in the gaming world. While it is categorized as an action adventure, there is a distinct platform-based RPG element to the game that makes it a very unique and interesting concept in the gaming world. Darksiders 3 doesn't break free from this idea. In the game, players take control of a Horseman of the Apocalypse, Fury, in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies and souls are running rife. Fury must solve various puzzles and quests in order to overcome various obstacles and deal with the hazardous terrain being presented to the player.
As the mechanics of the game suggest, there is a strong combat element to Darksiders 3 as well. This is where the game really shines, too. While the first two titles relied heavily on a massive onslaught of enemies just to keep players mashing buttons mindlessly, Darksiders 3 has taken a more cerebral approach with far fewer enemies on the screen. This means players will have to control Fury more directly and purposefully in order to successfully battle her enemies. The developers have confirmed that enemies are far stronger than those that were encountered in previous games. According to the game's developers, this is to make battles feel more “personal” as souls are harvested by Fury and this action subsequently increases the difficulty level of the game as players work towards the end goal.
Fury has several weapons available and players will likely find one they're most comfortable with. Fury is able to use a whip, sword, flail, and dagger in melee combat and is also able to cast magical spells on her opponents. In a unique addition to the series, Fury is also able to change forms into various elemental designs that unlock different sets of manoeuvres and attacks that might prove beneficial under different circumstances.
While platforming will play a key role in a player's progression in the game, Darksiders 3 is an open world where free roaming is actively encouraged. Players travelling off of the beaten path will regularly be treated to better items, raw materials for Darksiders 3's crafting system, or even rogue souls that can be traded as a form of in-game currency for equipment upgrades.
Players who enjoy the hack and slash experience will certainly feel right at home playing Darksiders 3. It provides a fun, lively experience for the genre with some rather unique inclusions to make for an all-round enjoyable gaming experience as a whole.
