There is potentially a fun game underneath, but Citadel: Forged with Fire is mired in a relentless time-draining loop of meaningless activity.

Citadel: Forged with Fire on the Xbox One doesn’t get off to the best of starts, throwing you in at the deep end with nothing to cling onto. The tutorial does a terrible job of explaining anything, even causing you to re-assign many of the buttons on the controller. But it’s worth sticking with. Figure out what you’re supposed to do and the game becomes a delightful sandbox for you to become the mage you were born to be.

I didn’t mind Citadel. It was the first of its style that I have ever actually played. I now realize the open world sandbox “do whatever you want” kind of games are not really for me, but I can easily see fans of this genre can have some fun here even with the shallow quest system, some clunky controls and the technical issues.

You are a novice Wizard, born into the world of the fires of Ignus. You are to brave the wilderness and build a name for yourself, and your house, in the world. Grow in power and learn to craft the most powerful of magics. Build a Fortress or Castle to claim your stake on the land, or create a "House", and build a sprawling village with your friends. Boasting a 36 square kilometer map, with several distinct regions, each with their own feel and dangers, the world of Ignus feels huge! Battle against, or tame a wide variety of fantasy creatures and some, like Horses, or Dragons, you can even ride! With solo or multiplayer modes you can play as you wish, with no real story to drive you along, your adventure is your own! There are a ton of public servers, both PvP and PvE, to chose from, but characters and progress are server-specific, so you can progress along several different paths depending on how many servers you'd like to play on. The dynamic building system allows for the construction of massive structures, and the world's resources are constantly respawning. The skill tree is huge! And is used to unlock everything you need to build items and structures. The game aims towards PvP conflict, and laying siege other players structures, but can be enjoyed without these aspects. If you love sandbox games, such as Minecraft or 7 Days to Die, and enjoy a high fantasy setting Citadel Forged with Fire is a must-have and an incredible experience!

Citadel: Forged With Fire is an OK attempt at the sandbox MMO genre, but one that’s flawed and riddled with problems. If you’re okay with its grindy pace and have some friends who also play the game, but might actually get to enjoy it. Wouldn’t recommend otherwise.
