I'll say this, if you're a fan of the classic RPG games of the 80's and 90's, then Asdivine Hearts is an absolute must have for your library. It goes without saying that this game manages to tick all the right boxes to make a classic RPG experience.

Despite its mixedAsdivine Hearts has mixed reviews across the board and it gives of the impression of a game that you either love or hate. Despite its mixed reviews though I still had some interest in the game and that’s mainly because I’m a sucker for the old 2D JRPG style. After a playing it a while though it was easy to see why the game has so many mixed reviews because whilst it gets a few things right it also gets quite a lot wrong and in the end for me it just got a little bit more wrong. The biggest problem with this game in my opinion is its lack of variety in key areas. This is a shame because in terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get to grips with but unfortunately despite its decent amount of content you feel like you’ve seen it all in just a few hours. Those few hours though are actually pretty fun and the gameplay doesn’t frustrate you very much because they’ve got the perfect balance of being fair and challenging at the same time. I also enjoyed the combat elements in the game as well because everything runs smoothly and there are a great deal of skills and spells for you to use against the enemies. Unfortunately the quests you face the enemies in are not as good and after only a brief amount of time you start to realise that each quest is basically the same and to say the quests end up getting tedious would be quite the understatement. Another thing I disliked about the quests is that in order to get the best items you have to grind quite a lot and this ultimately makes the quests even more repetetive and it makes carrying on feel like a chore. The story also feels like a chore from time to time as well and I think that was mainly down to the humour that’s present in it. Don’t get me wrong some of the humour did make me laugh slightly but they just keep shoving it down your throat and in the end the humour ends up being irritating instead of funny. Without a doubt my favourite thing about this game was its presentation. Visually the game has a nice retro look to it and when you combine the retro visuals with the nicely done sound design the game does deliver quite a bit of charm to you, which did play a part in making me want to carry on with my progress in the game. At the end of the day if you’re a fan of old-school JRPGs then you will find something that will tickle your fancy within Asdivine Hearts, but you will also find a great deal that will frustrate you as well and for me I can’t give the game a full recommendation because it just has too many shortcomings.
