Hitman’s less gifted cousin has a lot of flaws that I need to point out, like a poor story that I didn’t care about, stupid AI painfully reminding that you’re playing a game, and dated visuals. Surprisingly, despite all that I do not regret playing Alekhine’s Gun, because its mechanics are solid and eleven locations are varied and well-designed.

Biggest problem of AG isn’t the story or lackluster graphics, but its incredibly poor AI. Should you cause an alarm, every guard on the level will blindly run to that spot, letting you shoot them one by one without even changing position. At some point, you start to wonder – why bother trying to stealth around if it’s so much easier to just kill everyone?

You come at the king, you best not miss. Comparing Alekhine’s Gun to an AAA title like Hitman may seem unfair, but Maximum Games made the mistake of trying to defeat the ruler of the genre with its own weapons and they take a beating on every front.

It is hardly a spy thriller, but rather a madhouse with disguises and murders, so it’s best to avoid this chapter of Mr. Strogov’s life altogether.

It doesn't really stand up to much in the genre at all. Considering I wanted to enjoy this, the fact that I had to tap out midway into mission 2 speaks volumes.

Like another user mentioned, the game seems to be trying to emulate Hitman Blood Money, but goes ahead and bungles all the things that made the aforesaid game pleasing and is a technical nightmare to boot...don't get me wrong there were aspects of the game that sometimes had flashes of inspiration like the lock picking and the art direction was good enough to carry off some decent atmosphere but all the mistakes like the broken AI where NPCs rely on cone sight distance and nearly only become suspicious from your costume and not what you are doing. More words would be a waste of time, this game crashes and burns spectacularly - twice my video card totally dropped out and I had to completely power offon the computer to get a picture back...sounds unpleasant doesn't it? In the log file for the game it says the renderer is a debug build...the game seems to be in alpha stage. Fair warning.

Alekhine's Gun hardly does anything right. The gameplay feels ancient and the AI is not particularly intelligent. It's based on a concept we enjoyed in the past, but in a shape that doesn't make it enjoyable anymore.

In the rare moments where its elements come together, you’ll be playing a neat, but irrelevant Hitman clone. But most of the time you’re just annoyed by technical and AI shortcomings.

The bad news is that this entertaining and occasionally surprising narrative is wrapped around an inadequately polished Hitman knockoff.

Stealth games are meant to be challenging and should feel like a tense, punishing experience. But Alekhine’s Gun is stretch too far and instead punishes you because of its poor mechanics and terrible AI.

Like the chess move it’s named after, Alekhine’s Gun puts its pieces in the right places, but then it fails to follow through with any quality or grace. It’s hard to feel accomplished after pulling off a clean kill when the targets lack the competence to even defend themselves.

Given another year or two this might have turned out to be a solid Hitman alternative, but as it stands Alekhine’s Gun fails on every level – poor AI, abysmal frame rate, sub-par visuals, and horrendous shooting.

I suppose I should have realized Alekhine's Gun was going to have quality concern issues following its numerous delays. I just wasn't aware of how severe these problems would be, as the stale gameplay and dated graphics barely put it on level with games from the last console generation.
